I finally have enough wear to judge it, after being vast majority of the time work from home this past year. Once I have it set (6' tall) it's the right length for both over the shoulder or backpack style for me. To give feedback on one thing where I just learned to go slower: the two leather strips on the primary, movable shoulder pad get caught on the metal slide. I like the size and weight of the metal slide so I wouldn't want Hillside to downsize that risking making it too delicate (unless they can somehow affordably get forged metal slides. GL!), so maybe just a 1/4" more length of the two shoulder pad connecting straps would allow for a speedier transition.
This bag is absolutely amazing. Quality leather, solid metal fastenings and zippers, and a great strap. Even if you completely ignore the backpack functionality, it's just a high quality, stylish messenger bag/briefcase.
I use it as a backpack regularly, since I bike to work, and it's quite useful. My laptop doesn't shift around inside, and the bag stays closed and secure.
Hillside's customer service was amazing as well, I wanted a brown bag with a black strap, and they were more than happy to accommodate me.
I liked the bag and the company so much that I bought a second bag in black leather from them to give someone as a Christmas present.
tl;dr - great bag, great company, would buy again and recommend to anyone looking for a quality product.
Backpack function is a gimmick. The strap digs into and squishes the leather, which I fear will cause a lot of unnecessary wrinkles in the leather over time. Also, the rings dig into my back which is super uncomfortable. I feel like all the pictures and videos were taken with a very light bag overstuffed with paper which is a little deceiving.
Now you don't have to set it up as a backpack but the shoulder strap is too long. The bag position is lower than I'd like when the strap is as short as is gets.
I don't know what I'm going to do with this thing
The bag is overall well-made. I'm not entirely sure I'll use the backpack function that much because real backpacks are still more comfortable. There could also be improvement to the strap pads. They aren't very padded and tend to slip a lot.
My biggest disappointment is the vegan leather. It doesn't look or feel like the real thing. It's very slick and shinny. Maybe it will be get better with age.
t-allHi Ti-all,
Thank you for your review! Just to clarify our bags are made from cowhide leather. It’s vegetable tanned leather which is a type of tanning process that uses vegetable tannins to process the leather as opposed to chrome tanning which uses chemicals. Sorry for the confusion. Hope you continue to like our bag. Please check out our demo page at www.DiscoverHillside.com/pages/demo for some handy tips. Happy New Year and thank you for your support!
Best,
Team Hilly
