The serrated blade is used for cutting fibrous material like a rope or tissue. It's for that thicker material that a standard blade may not cut through as quickly. However, if it requires multiple back-and-forth strokes, you should probably be using a different tool to cut through it. Also remember that the serrated section of the blade can be more challenging to resharpen. Instead of a stone, you use a file - so it makes sense not to try to cut something like soft metal (i.e. aluminum can) that will quickly dull it.
