Having tried one of these, I seriously suggest everyone avoids this product. It's no more convenient than using your standard phone mounts and often has additional issues of its own (the phone rarely stays put). These also rely on you using the company's app to get the "best experience", these apps are pretty awful and often fail to give good direction/speed/etc. Stay away from this product.

If I put my phone on the dashboard and used a mirror I'd have the same functionality. Since the Hudway doesn't project onto the windscreen you'll have to refocus anyway. Just like you'd refocus on your speedometer or satnav.

When will they start making these with optics to display the image at infinity :/ What's the point of a HUD if you have to refocus your eyes...

comfyblanketGood point. I guess the technology has been around for ages in fighter plane HUDs, but I'm not sure it can be adapted to reflect a phone screen at infinity.

Daisy_CutterIn order for eyes to look at "infinity" projected image has to be collimated, or in other words make light rays as parallel as possible. Needless to say having this option in phones is useless and in addition to that, having such option for cheap is hard.

So $49.95 is the msrp but the current drop value is $0.04 *more* than the msrp? What am I missing?

zsoumyaEither 29 people or less pay extra, or 30 plus people"save" about $10. Either way, people will largely be disappointed overall.

i wonder what people expected out of a $40 gadget.
it's like all the $20 VR headsets, you get what you paid for. nothing more, nothing less.
tried 2 cars with HUDs, a cadillac cts and a mercedes E class. on both cars it looks amazing and sunshine don't bother it at all. on the caddy it is standard and on the benz it's a $900 option.
now think about this for a sec.......this is $40........
what i'm saying is......don't be dissapointed once you try it. it's a great concept, but that's about it

Yes but it still looks like cheap garbage. you can put the sickest rims out there on a honda civic. But at the end of the day, its still a cheap secretarys piece of junk civic.
people expect this to be as clear as the factory optioned ones. Newsflash: it aint. Its a $50 novelty item

NYalexYeah it is a novelty item but not really cheap imo I was part of the kick-starting the initial version and am happy with what I got is durable and has survived a decent amount of dropage as well with a little modification added in wireless charging. The apps imo are well done but are not for everyone, I would think of this as a GPS unit with a different type of display and whole you do have your phone and car mounts they block vision while this doesn't

No one pointed the fact that your phone will be subject to direct sunlight and difficult to charge on the dash. Doesn't seem like a good idea...

I have one... So here is my review still learning about it as there are a lot of apps that can HUD. First let me say that 49.95 is the price everywhere so the 39 dollar is a good deal but the 49 is not even a drop. My phone is droid Z force with battery mod, glass screen protector, and edge bumper. It is big, heavy, and expensive. but i love the size, and have big fingers. The battery mod lets it last for about 2.5 days, but i swap the mod with a second one that is charging so i never really need to charge the phone. . In this setup it is thicker and heavier than everything else. It fits the HUD and stays put in the turns.
The item is well constructed and the screen seems to be very well thought out. Its shape makes the image larger than your phone. It adjusts so you can get the hud just right. it is a slight smoke in daytime and may have some polarization. Now at night it looks clear almost 3D in the reflection, Very cool. In daytime i have to turn up my screen to max and it is good most the time. But if you are driving into the sun it gets hard to see. this does not happen much and is an issue for all huds not just this one. At night i have an issue with my setup. the phone has a direct reflection at the top of my window right in my sight line. As the sticky glue that mounts is good, and location is good for vision, i do not want to try and move it. there is not enough space on the dash to move it closer, so i will make a small black plastic visor piece and clip it to the top edge of the "glass" this will solve my issue. But you need to set it in place during the day and check it at night BEFORE you peel the sticky and mount it. Every car has different angles of glass and dash so YRMV. The sticky mount pad has some flex to mount on a curve but if your dash curves a lot the edges may over time come up. time will tell. hence part of the reason NOT to move it after sticky peel.
the mount allows you to adjust the level LR and Front to back so the screen is square to your eyes. very nice for install. But the basic mount is just the magnet circle with sticky. it does not allow any adjustment so a level flat surface is a must for it. i will be looking at using it in my wife's car. this gives me a second car i can use it, we use hers for long trips. and it is flat disk so she will not gripe about a big empty mount in front of her. well see.
ISSUE #1 The magnet in the center of the mount that the base pops onto came out 2 minutes after install. This is a manufacturing issue not a design one. there was not enough glue it hold it. i put some super glue on it and a minute later works fine. BUT a but percentage of people can not fix things and this will give the first run a bad name. but if you can use super glue its not a big deal. NOTE do not use the base to put the magnet in as it sits lower than the base and needs to be pushed deeper for the glue to contact than the base allows; so use your fingers to drop it in and push it down. Don't wait for it to break with your phone in it at 45 in traffic, wiggle it around, mount and dismount the base a bunch and see if you got one with a glue issue.
Now on to the apps. it comes with a promo code that let you register the 3 hudway apps for lifetime premium. it also references another nav app but it cost $50 and the hud feature is a second fee in an add in so that one while very nice , i am not ready to put down more money than any app i have bought so far. I have looked at another nav app but this becomes a personal taste issue so pick your own. the hudway apps work together in a selection screen even though they are 3 apps. the speedometers are not really worth it but the speed zone one is nice. it saw the speed zones perfect in town but in a new construction in a small town it did not have the speed right. not sure where it gets data or how soon it updates but it testing it worked well enough to be cool. might help me avoid a ticket as i am a ...ahem...fast driver. the nav app is good for hud work but the voice is not google level. its a little more basic. i am testing out my engine app TORQUE, that talks to my car and allows me to make a screen with gauges and has a hud setting. this would be a cool setup. the driving quality app seems good but after working it for a while seems like most people are driving pretty good so this one i wont use much.
heat and power i have run it for several hours with no issue, but its not hot out. If you have the ac on should be a non issue. the screen protects the phone from direct sun well. but your install will be unique and location on dash is the biggest decision. the apps are no more heat makers than google maps. it can use the battery faster at max screen brightness but using a power adapter will solve that. while i do not have this issue i do have my power cord for long trips to lessen battery drain. phone getting hot does not seem to be an issue but phoenix in august i would not leave it on the dash in a locked car. the mount is a magnet mount for a reason. pull it down when you park. long term 140+ will have some effect on the plastic.
conclusion- if you are into HUD this is a cool low cost setup that does a good job for the money. like any new thing it has issues like the glue one, but that should be fixed in future runs i hope. The boxing is high end with storage bag, good instructions and free apps. Install options are as much as could be for a mass used item. The apps are very nice and worth about $20 alone. You can get the apps now and look at them before buying the HUD screen. No HUD system is a perfect fit for everyone. every install and user is different but this setup let you play with one, solving many issues of home-brewed ones. keeping the phone is place, easy and fast setup and take down, and great imaging are found in this one. Plus your friends will see it and the cool factor is huge. 4/5 stars
