C_DHPThat's the best part!
I prefer assembling my stuff: I get a better knowlege of how it works and how it's constructed, so I can well evaluate the engineering. Also, it's easier to do my own upgrades and modifications.
When you buy a premade product you are basically taking it on faith that it's well engineered or "not going to break on me". This decesion is often based on some ort of brand loyalty or preconception. The sort of decision that's based on the output of the huge advertising industry.
The sort of open source / open hardware projects like his appeal to a person like me who likes to make their own decisions. I can look at the plans (and the assembly) and directly evaluate if the engineering is up to my standard. I'll also know that it passes quality control (my own stringent checks) and I can fix it if anything happens. I learn more, I know it's good (and that it'll work and be reliable) it's a win/win/win situation for me.
But then again, I'm some sort of "hacker" or "maker". Who are you?

dorkvaderWho am I? I'm someone who peels bananas when I want one at night time. I might have had to drive to the store just then, but finding one open at midnight wasn't a big deal. When I got there, I inspected the bananas to find the best that meets my criteria. They were on sale, and I had a hard time not buying an entire bunch, because that was the advertising industry trying to get me. No, I came here for one banana, and damn it, I would leave with only one. And I did. I got home, I got naked, and I peeled that banana. And I ate it. And it was delicious. And I got some potassium from it. A healthy snack indeed. Who are you?

dorkvaderSomebody who likes to pay 70 dollars for a clock thats already made? Why spend so much excess money for the ability to make it yourself? These parts are worth pennies you can buy anywhere, if they assembled it all themselves maybe the clock is worth this drop. But then not even assembling it, whats the point? Just spend some actual time and make your own clock from scratch, not spend a retarded amount of money for an IKEA DIY instruction book for a clock

ConjaYou can say the same for most other products... they are pennies if you buy the raw material/ raw components.
