rsx19Mine is on my nightstand. I have pretty sensitive hearing and mine doesn't make any noise I can hear. It has adjustable brightness. My unit goes from 30 to 90 brightness (weird scale). I have it set to 55; Which is just bright enough to see it during full sunlight, but also just bright enough to be a little annoying at night.
