How do these work with a normal switch, do they turn on properly or must they be controlled by the app? If they do work on a switch how do they work with a dimable?

BriDilumi will function as a normal light bulb, which means you can turn it on and off at the regular light switch or control via the app. The dimmable function, however, is only available through the app. Since it's an electronic, you'll want to make sure that ilumi receives 100% full power, otherwise it will simply turn off.
