Snapshots of LA Life

Founded by Los Angeles heavy hitters Douglas Williams and Keith Morris, Image Club Limited is an apparel collection that features snapshots of life in Southern California. Williams is a cofounding member of the Teenage Millionaire clothing brand and Fleabass Musical Instruments, while Morris is a cofounding member of hardcore punk band Circle Jerks and Black Flag, one of the most recognizable names in West Coast punk. Inspired by this background of music and design, they sought artwork from some of their favorite photographers—friends they grew up with in the clubs and on the streets in and around LA. Each shirt is made in the USA of 100 percent cotton.

Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice of 10 crewneck T-shirts, one long-sleeve tee, and four sweatshirts. Prices vary by style. Sizes are available in S to XXL.

Ice Cube T-Shirt (+ $8)

Shot by Ed Colver, early ‘90s. He says, “Just after NWA broke up, I was asked to shoot Ice Cube signing his new contract with Priority Records. At the time, instead of using an on-camera flash for such work, I was using a small portable strobe pack and a single light with an umbrella, and that’s what I brought for this session. As I photographed Ice Cube sitting at a desk signing the contract with the Priority 'suits' standing behind him, I was struck by how intense his eyes were. As soon as we were done and the suits had left, I asked Ice Cube if I could also shoot a portrait and he said ‘sure.’”

About Ed Colver

Ed Colver is a third-generation Californian raised in the suburbs 30 miles east of Los Angeles. He started attending concerts in the mid-60s and was drawn to the Sunset Strip concert scene in 1978. That was when he first decided to bring a camera to a show. He had found a 35mm Yashika Rangefinder laying around in the factory where he worked and took it when no one was looking. Later, a TV news report drew him to a few shows at Madame Wong's in Chinatown, and when the Hong Kong Cafe started having bands play there, he never looked back.

He made the distinction early on between punk and new wave. He liked punk; everything about it was intriguing. Soon afterwards, he was at virtually every punk show from LA to Orange County to San Bernardino. During the early days, he made many friends in the punk scene, including Keith Morris. He has never advertised, never had a public phone number, and never asked for work, and he has used a funeral sympathy card as his business card. See more of Ed’s photos.

About Gary Leonard

Gary says, "The day of the original moon landing, while everyone was glued to their TVs, I took my Triumph TR3 on the 101 to the 405 out to Malibu. There wasn't a car on the road. The freeways have never been so clear. Everyone said, 'You missed it.' I take pictures to share an alternative perspective to what is happening. Each photo is an appreciation of the moment and my personal take on Los Angeles."

About Ithaka Darin Pappas

Ithaka Darin Pappas began experimenting with his father's 35mm and medium-format film cameras as early as age 5. He started assisting professional photographers immediately after high school, and within a year, began publishing much of his own work. Perhaps the most published (and republished) commercial photographic works by IDP are his early archival images of the influential LA Gangsta rap group NWA. Pappas worked for the West Coast record label Priority Records between 1988 and 1991 and documented almost the entire lifespan of the group, from their obscure South Central beginnings to their meteoric rise to controversial super-stardom.

About Geoff Moore

Kicked out of mom's house at age 17 for having an illicit lifestyle, Moore landed on a bass player friend's couch in Hollywood. No good at guitar but great with a camera and possessing a big imagination, he became immersed in the LA youth subculture of music and the arts. He started directing music videos and photographing the LA backdrop of his life, and he hasn’t looked back since. The self-taught photographer’s indelible cinematic mark can be seen all over the world.
