Great sound

The high frequency range produced by the piezo driver is natural and comfortable, and it's a good iem that won't tire you out even after long hours of use.

Crappy cables

Likes others have said. The cables housing gets hard over time and then crack. This eventually leads to the copper wire inside to break resulting in a dead iem. i ordered OFC 2 pin replacement cables from amazon but they don’t fit. Not sure if these use a proprietary connection or a different one than the one I got, but this has turned into a pain in the ass. EDIT: I think they are proprietary. The cables i got from amazon have a rectangle male connector with SQUARED edges while the IEM's have a female rectangle socket with ROUNDED edges. So basically IMR cables will fit in other headphones/IEM's that use standard OFC 2 pin cables, however standard OFC 2 pin cables won't fit in the R2 ATEN IEM's. I just ordered extra cables direct from IMR and they're freaken $85 USD a piece. This seems like an intentional design flaw. The IEM's themselves are freaken amazing. The best i've ever used. If it wasn't for this one problem, i would have nothing bad to say about them.

Great sound

I have been enjoying these iems and having them slowly burn in. The sound evolves over time and is nice. I would give five stars, however IMR had forgotten to include some of my filters so I cannot give the best rating... please be diligent IMR about being consistent to your customers...

Well-built IEMs with very detailed sound and plenty of bottom end!

While I love my RHA CL750, I often found myself frustrated with its treble focused sound (i.e. lacks bass...). I was looking around for a good quality pair of IEMs with good clarity AND bass. I frankly would not have bought IMR R2 Aten at its original price of $500 but Drop had a great deal so I went for it. After a week of tinkering, I am happy to say that I am satisfied with the purchase. With the combination of purple nozzles, black filters, and foam tips, IMR R2 Aten provides a good balance of air/clarity, detail, warmth, and bottom end (to my ears anyway). These are the first pair of IEMs I've tried that feature piezo drivers and they really do wonders for making those small details pop! They are also easy to drive and come with both single-ended and balanced cables. I look forward to discovering the subtle nuances in my music collection with IMR R2 Aten and would recommend these for someone looking for a quality pair of IEMs.

Great Sound, Not Very Open

First off, these just sound really good! They are good to the point that I’ve found them hard to put down. The quality of sound, imaging and soundstage are all excellent. The open back surely contributes to the great presentation and “spaciousness”. Here’s the thing though, they may be “open back”, but they aren’t really open. I was under the impression they would be like other open back headphones where I could hear my surroundings and air could flow openly from my ear canals to the outside world. They are not that, not in the slightest. So, if that is what you want (I did) then these aren’t it. In fact, these have quite a bit of isolation. Now, as others have mentioned, they do take a bit of messing around with the filters to dial in the right sound for you. If you want your ear drums beaten to a pulp with bass, they’ll do that. If you like your eardrums pierced with daggers of treble, they’ll do that too. If you want a nice smooth response across the board, yep, they got you covered there. Versatility is there enough to suit most tastes. The build is nice, and the cables are quality. I’m not a super big fan of the cables, however, as the connector and bend stick out way past my ears. An angled connector would suit me a lot better. To that end, I ordered a different, lower quality cable with a short 45ish degree angle boot and find that it fits me a lot better. I do not have very large ears though. I typically don’t care for in-ears. In fact, I’d say that I rather dislike IEMs in general, due the the discomfort and closed in feeling. BUT, these sound good enough that I look past all that and want to use them. Are they perfect? Nope, they are not. What they are is just a really nice, solidly built and great sounding earphone with a surprisingly wide soundstage.

At some point I decided, that I'd like to experiment with openback iems and IMR looked like a way to go. There are graphs, there are reviews, everything seemed to be fine. I should say, that imho burn-in is up to 200 hours, which is fine I'm okay with that. Regarding sound quality - it's great. After burning them in and finishing my experiments with frequency adjustment, I settled down on purple and black nozzles, so it's a bit brighter than something I'd assume to be neutral. They reminded me GR07 with a much better highs and that natural sound which could be brought only by openback design. Positioning and imaging are great, it's more of an oval shape and goes very-very wide for IEMs. On a good source it is going beyond your face and sits on your nose, around your eyeballs and at the back of the skull. All this while offering you an ability to pin point sound sources. Of course your could say that lowest bass is dominated by mid-bass, but it's there and you don't miss representation of this region. On the red and black large nozzles this quality disappears, but they both offer overwhelming amounts of bass and the difference between them is almost none present. And it's probably not the fastest dynamic driver your heard but it's very decent and I consider this to be sufficient. Highs are simply the best, but I just like this type of driver, it sounds better then armature and multi-armature as for my taste. Highs are natural, have a very nice hit and weight while extending as far as it gets. Drum set is sounding very natural and representative. Regarding my one star evaluation - it's all because Aten simply broke after six-seven weeks of usage. Left channel volume level got extremely low. I addressed to professionals and they mentioned that soldering quality is mediocre at best and that crossover board construction oddly differs on left and right pieces. After checking everything they told me that probably there is an issue with headphone capsule itself, but it sits on glue and there is no way to disassembly it without damaging it permanently. I'm just lucky I've got a couple of spare iems. UPD. I was advised to address directly to IMR, which I did. Bob replied very fast and immediately agreed to send a spare iem piece. I received it, everything works fine so far. Fun fact - new right earpiece sound is identical to burned-in old left earpiece, so no burn-in required for the new piece. Don't know if I've imagined burn-in or is this new piece already burned-in from the factory.

Fantastic!

Overall very pleased. I'm coming for a background of tin t2's, Blon-03, and Sennheiser hd58x. To be honest, these replicate the same "style" of sound as the hd58x, but the bass is a little punchier and is felt better inside my head, making the separation between treble and bass very nice. I am no long-standing audiophile, so take my opinion as you will, but as a consumer who doesn't care too much about statistics of my headphones and just wants some nice sound, these definitely deliver. However, I still tend to go for my hd58x and Blon-03's very often, so do not think that they are superior and cannot be beat. They offer a very nice sound, and the tuning kit helps for sure, but sometimes I just want to listen to something different and the other audio gear I have simply does the job better. I am running everything off an element-II for reference. In my opinion, if you are new I recommend starting with something cheaper like the Blon-3, so that if you ever were to upgrade to something like this, you would better appreciate the details. Even then, as I already mentioned I still go for other things in my collection, bu these definitely have a lot of play time. I have also heard about the suspicious backstory of the brand. While I understand that many were burnt, this review is completely unbiased and is written in the perspective of someone relatively new to the hobby and is simply a review of this specific product and my experiences. If you are however in the same boat as me, I can confirm that I have PERSONALLY had a great experience both with Drop and IMR in this purchase. If you have already purchased them, I promise you will not regret it. If not, I would highly encourage it if you're looking for an upgrade!
