To be honest with you guys.. instead of using some solder, I think I am just going to use super glue to to secure the USB connector. ....
looking at the image now uploaded on the build guide.. I don't think adding additional small blob of solder on two sides is going to help that much, if at all
Can you post pics if you end up doing this? I am thinking about doing the same thing. The "fix" proposed in the build guide requires additional types of solder and seems risky. I was thinking two dots of glue on the sides of the connector between the board and the connector walls.
If I end up using super glue, then the worst thing it can happen is that I accidentally over flowed the super glue and they some how made their way onto the micro usb contracting pins.
So I plan to plug in a USB 3 cable when I am doing it. If I do screw up... which I will try to prevent, it won't be the end of the world and I still have a functional keyboard.
This is not very likely to happen assuming you are doing this with caution..
Some less runny glue can be used as well. though depends on the glue, they may or may not work on metal to PCB board.
I used epoxy, stronger than super glue and easier to work with.
does epoxy bond to metal well?
Yeah some do. On the label it will state what they are good for. Most epoxies will bond to metal. I found one that said it would bond to metal and fibre glass.
But even then I am being very careful not to put strain on the connector.
I think the use of such a small connector was a mistake.
I went pretty much all-out for fear of ever having to de-solder all those switches. Extra solder, a spot of epoxy on each side of the connector and a lump of epoxy ontop to take up some of the space between the top of the connector and the key plate. Seems pretty stable but I'm still being pretty careful while using these beefy cables.
...use "non-drip" type of super glue - there are tons of options, all in a gel form. Make sure it is not "elastic" type bond, just a regular non-drip superglue. HAs good adhesion to *CLEAN* metals, and PCB-type material. Apply generously, but be aware, in such application, you will need to wait perhaps overnight for glue to harden, not your typical 5 seconds.
Done and tested, on my sons' Skylanders figurines - you can't even begin to imagine, in how many ways a 4 years old can screw a plastic figurine. But depending on the break point, enforcing it with applying gelly superglue generously around it, and leaving for 24h to harden, does the trick. Be aware, the glue will become non-transparent ("milky/white") colour, while it hardens
