Hey yall! Anybody know what size leds we need? I ordered 5mm but I'm thinking that might be a bit too big. I plan on installing them on both sides of the pcb. Thanks!!
The consensus seems to be 2x3x4 LED. People have been using that. The ergodox FAQ says 3MM flangeless LEDs is what input club suggests.
2x3x4mm or 3mm flangeless. 5mm is too big
aww dang.. I can always solder on the 2x3x4 later when I get some right? I don't see any reason why I wouldn't be able to.
yep you can always add them later :) You can also pre-empt it too, but getting some SIP sockets and putting those into the keycaps so that you can just swap the LEDs in and out as you please without soldering https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=51792.0
That's what I did, and totally worth the extra time it took, since it allows for color coding the keyboard with various LED colors no matter what you do with the layout, and also handy incase an LED dies etc.
am I able to do the SIP socket build later as well?? It looks like I would be able to...
I don't think so, unless you are able to somehow open the cherry mx switches while they are attached to the mounting plate and soldered to the board. Maybe it's possible but it will be difficult. It would be easier to just add the LEDs on their own.
I was able to open the switches easily with a tool intended for that use. I plan to put the rest of my SIP sockets in over the weekend.
Do you have any idea if you can install the stabilizers after all the switches have been soldered on?
