I'm looking at the Matias keycaps. Is there a good way to mount LEDs that actually use the transparent bodies? All I've seen so far in this discussion (haven't read all of it) is mounting under the PCB, which doesn't seem to give good results. Is there enough clearance to mount between the PCB and the switch, or mount them underneath but shining up through the PCB holes under the switches?
My current board uses Cherry switches and I don't mind them, but I was thinking of trying something different this time; I'd just like the option for backlighting.
I don't think theres enough space to mount them between the PCB and the switch, because they'd need to sandwich between the PCB and plate.
The LEDs shine out the top, and there's not enough clearance to bend them vertical. You might be able to angle them to get indirect light topside, but then you can only get black caps with the Matias switches anyway.
What you might try doing is using surface mount LEDs and soldering some leads from the PCB pads to the LED body. I think you could get the light directed upwards that way.
