I'm confused about something: Is the USB 3 superspeed cable actually necessary? I want to get a longer joining cable, and I'm having trouble finding one with superspeed. Can I just use normal micro B?

From what I understand, the interconnect does have to be a USB 3.0 cable. It uses the additional pins for the interconnect. BUT the cable you use to connect to your computer can be a standard microUSB (non 3.0).
I believe you could use the longer USB cable that came with the kit as the interconnect and use a standard micro cable to connect to the computer and everything should work fine.
[EDIT] just tested this. A standard micro USB cable for the connection to the PC does indeed work. So as long as the longer connection cable that came with the kit is long enough for you, your're good to go.
[EDIT 2] if that isn't long enough, here's a link to a longer cable on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-USB-3-0-Cable--Male/dp/B00NH13BI2/
