Hello! I am planning on ordering one of these kits, and it will be my first mechanical keyboard. Because there are only 10 days left, I'm thinking I will probably order it without switches or caps (for $164), and then order those separately, later. I like the carbon set (ErgoDox and Dvorak options), so I'll probably wait for that to be re-offered.
My question is, what is the most economical way to buy a mismatched set of switches? For example, suppose I decide I want MX Red for WASD, and MX Brown for everything else (72 browns). What would be the cheapest way of getting such a combination? Where would you typically buy such things? I'm not totally certain what switches I would prefer, so I'm considering getting the NPKC 17 switch tester for $30 (with shipping), which I'm also not certain would arrive within 10 days. Is it worth while? Some advice would be appreciated.

Aru3Depending on where you buy the switches, you may be able to find them in a small(er) packs - mechanicalkeyboards.com sells them in multiples of ten for example - though in my opinion it's often not worth it (they are 1$/switch when you do it that way). You may be able to find just a couple switches if you look somewhere like /r/mechmarket though - I know I usually buy about 8 - 10 switches extra when I do a build - so that is what I where I would check for just four reds.
In my opinion, switch testers are never really worth it - you just don't get a decent experience pressing one key like that. I would figure out what overall type of switch you think you would like - linear, tactile, or clicky - and then buy the weight you think you would like... if it turns out to be to light/heavy, I would then look into replacing the spring (this drop allows for switch top removal without having to desolder).

Aru3I think you would be okay using MX Browns everywhere. The "tactile bump" is very minimal, in my opinion. The Browns are extremely popular, and very usable.
I was in the previous drop, and I went with MX Clears. Those have a more-significant bump, and require more force. I mostly write code, and I decided to go with a tactile switch with more force than the Browns (i.e. the Clears). From my perspective, I agree with what @graefeln said in his/her answer, that a switch tester won't give you the full experience by pressing one key at a time. The difference between the Browns and Clears was *very* noticeable when I had all 78 keys to type on, but not when I tried pressing them singly on a friend's switch-tester. It took me a few days to adjust to the additional force of all the Clears on my Ergodox. I think I could have gone with Browns and been happy, too.
My best guess: if you have been using stock keyboards up to now, you will like the Browns just fine.

Aru3Just a comment on waiting for the Carbon keycaps specifically, you will be waiting for a long time with no clear indication that it will come back at all. With the Carbon recently doing a GMK drop (the ones pictured here were an earlier SA run) and it hasn't shipped yet, I would doubt you will see another one until a year at least.
Now if you are not bound to Carbon specifically, I'm sure plenty of other custom sets with ergodox support will show up. But do note that those will take a bit of time to ship out, given their custom nature.

Aru3Thank you both very much for the advice, I won't buy the tester, and I'm probably going MX Brown. I don't know enough about switches to know if there's any reason I should pick one of the other brands, I'm just going with Cherry because it's popularly approved of. (Is there a reason to pick non-Cherry?)
I've only used the rubber dome keyboards, I've been using my current one for... at least 4 years, I think (Dvorak Simplified layout even longer). They say the rubber wears out over time, but the non-linear bump is still good, and the travel distance nice and short. I use it for gaming, coding and English. They are why I'm not too afraid of gaming with all MX Brown, but I think MX Red might still be an upgrade for WASD, I read some people prefer them for gaming (especially competitive FPS). But I don't think it's worth going linear on all the keys, I do more typing than gaming. MX Brown just seems like the option I'm least likely to regret. I guess I'll decide after it's assembled, whether to hunt on /r/mechmarket as graefeln suggested (I don't use reddit frequently). Any kind of compromise would just seem... out of place on a keyboard like this. From what I've seen of this crowd, it's a sentiment many users share, you look at small things, looking for perfection, one detail at a time, looks like you've picked up what the relatively dead industry for durable, comfortable mechanical keyboards left behind.
And from what further browsing I've done, it looks like keycaps are even more of a zoo, and even more expensive, than the switches are, which I did not expect. And it looks like, Carbon might not be re-offered at all, so maybe I should order the DSA set offered with this drop, or maybe I shouldn't? I'm not very familiar with this community or this site, I don't know what the options are. I don't even understand how the pricing works on the Carbon page. (I really like orange.)
edit: Thank you Zalhera, for some reason I didn't see your post before I made this one, maybe I forgot to refresh. So, when do the other ErgoDox keycap* sets usually show up? A couple months from now?

Aru3Hard to tell; the drops are not exactly announced in advance usually. The safest option is to pick up blanks and replace them when a good set comes by. Better than having nothing at all.
You can even get standard non-ErgoDox sets for at least the main keys. THe hardest to find are the modifiers, so it would be smart to get the blank set if only for that, I'd say.
