Can people having the Hacker version of the keyboard post pictures of their last row. There are gaps between the keys - and I realize that none of the pictures in the description section showed the Hacker version. Did MD even assemble the hacker version to verify that the keys fit properly. The Fn keys do not line up on the left border. And for the keyboard layout shown in the diagrams - there are not just enough keys to have it like as shown (in the Hacker diagram on the description page). I am not happy with how the last row looks after spending all this money on it - not to mention about the spacebar mixup for this version.
confirmed. I have the same gaps and I cannot use the smaller spacebar in any combination,- I can only use the wider one.
shit... I still haven't assembled mine... now I am real worried
I have the same problem, the CNC milling is all over the place. The Cherry MX mounts are crooked, slanted and the spacing is a total mess. I contacted Massdrop about this and got a refund. Did you ask for a refund?
I got a mail today about this saying that " the vendor is unable to provide a replacement for this unit " and they have given me an RMA #/label. I am in two minds regarding returning it vs. keeping it. I like the keyboard for its looks and the flexibility to program it but for $220 the R4 keys not lining up is a bummer. Poor QC by MD.
this odd spacing is caused by the larger space bar in use. Those of us with hacker layout boards are supposed to use the smaller spacebar which we have gotten officially emailed about the progress on this and will be getting hopefully soon. (I'm too lazy to dig it up to get the dates they said, but if you're effected, you should have it too)
I took a rubbish spacebar of mine and hacked the ends off a bit with my soldering angle-snips, and have no gaps on any of these keys, it's just the spacebar is ugly until the proper one gets here.
Now in relation to Aoli, I'm not sure what issue is happening there, unless it was a pre-assembled board.
The Cherry MX PCB mount holes were extremely tight, and took a lot of effort to get pushed into place by comparison of the Dox, but nothing was crooked. I'm not sure how one would get a switch into the board if it were crooked, the holes are pretty precise. In my assembly I started by placing the keys into the four corners, soldering, then adding 4 more towards the middle to make squares, soldering, and then I filled the board out slowly ensuring all plate latches popped out as I went, and soldered those.
Now that we've had a proper, email, communication, I'm sure we'll all get sorted, but boy, this one has been a wait.
I don't think you have any thing to worry about, once we get our hacker space bars, we'll be set, and everything will fit right.
I am not worrying about the spacebar since a replacement by MD is in the works. My issue is that the Hacker reference layout shows F_n keys on the bottom left and the bottom right corners. Firstly there arent enough F_n keys in the kit to do that (I think it is 1 short) and the one that is given doesn't line up when you use it - see my pic. I expected there would be keycaps to have the keyboard just as shown in the hacker key layout figure.
The board I got was pre-assembled. What don't you get about the bad milling and QC? Just look at OP's pictures. A new spacebar is not going to fix the bad spacing of OP's left "Fn" nor the spacing and crookedness of his """ (left from Enter) and "?" keys.
There are plenty of keys to fit it as show in the drop photos. As I stated above, the reason people have the misaligned keys are that they are using the 6.25u space bar and thus have used whatever keys fit on the remainder of the bottom row. You're not going to have any issue making it look like the photo once your space bar arrives.
Here I mangled a 6.25u spacebar to fit into the 6u space, the keys fit fine. (My 1u green FN should be the 1u Hack key, but as I have blue-kit I used the green FN there. There's no difference in Hack/FN key size.)
I am not saying that no key will fit - only that the diagram for the hacker reference layout shows Fn for the bottom left and bottom right corners - but the kit that came has no Fn key that will fit properly without misaligned edges. Dont you think that is an issue - or am I jumping to conclusion by assuming that the kit should have the keys as shown in the diagram? If you see - no photo was shown with the hacker layout.
Did you (or anyone else) get their replacement hacker spacebars?? Its been ages and still not sign of getting what we paid for. If anyone from massdrop is reading - please let us know an update.
I have not yet, however Yanbo has provided an update further down in the comments.
"Hey there, the tooling came out well so we have replacement spacebars on order.
We are expecting them to come in at the end of October. I'll keep everyone updated as soon as they arrive!"
I personally will be checking back mid to late November if we have not heard anything by then.
