I use these to bicycle when I don't want to clip in, and they are great for that. The sole is not thick enough to comfortably support me walking on other than all-dirt trails.
Took my shoes from the post office and headed to the trail immediately.
They are awesome! So light and ventilated, the fit was great and the toe area was very spacious.
Can anyone comment on how much of an arch this shoe has? I have really flat feet, so shoes with a lot of "arch support" really bother me. I always feel like there's like a foreign object in my shoe if there's a significant arch. I would normally never gamble on buying shoes online without trying them on, but these are relatively cheap and I really need some lighter hiking shoes that are a larger size than my current pair. Long story short, my very expensive, heavier hiking shoes are too small, and I almost lost a big toe nail on my last backpacking trip. Not fun! I'm thinking about gambling on these shoes, but if they have a big arch that's a definite deal-breaker. Thanks!
JonJI don't have the Terraclaw specifically but I have several pair of Inov-8s (Roclite, Road Xtreme, F-lite). They are pretty neutral in my opinion. Low arch, wide toe box, and minimal heel-toe drop. I wear a 0mm for the gym and a 4-6mm for hiking. I literally only wear these now for hiking, I picked up a pair of Dexshell Waterproof Thermlite Socks for real bad weather.
Let me start by saying every foot is different and preference plays a big role in this. Go to a running shoe store and try some similar styles on. Your retailer may even be familiar with this brand and give you recommendations based on your foot size/type. The first pair of Inov's I bought was actually in a Fleet Feet. For those wanting to stay at home, maybe the following will help.
I've been scratching my head over all of the size comments I've read so I thought I would put up some pictures. I wear a size 9 and trainers and a 8.5 in most performance shoes. Below I have a Saucony Guide 9 in men's USA 9. My fingernail is pointed at where the front of my toe is located. I also have a men's USA size 8.5 in the Inov-8 Terraclaw. My fingernail is also marking the tip of my toe. To me, the Inov-8 Terraclaw exactly as expected and is very comparable to most shoes of its type. I've also compared to some other models I have in 8.5 Like Saucony Kinvara 5 (this is an older model) and Inov-8 X-talon 190. But every foot is different and preference plays a big role in this (many people say my trainers are too big) so my recommendation would be to go to a running store and try on some of their light weight road running shoes. I will say people with wide feet that think they are going to be wearing these shoes for hours, beware.
Hi Gary! Was in your neighborhood over the weekend (the mountain one, not the ocean one) and thought about you! How's everything? Are you looking at buying some trail shoes?
Before you order, consider this.
I bought a pair of the blue/yellow ones at Amazon. My size is 9.5, and that's what I got. It turns out it is a little shorter, since trail running shoes should have at least a half-thumbnail space in front of your big toes. These shoes almost fit this criteria, and I could probably live with it if it wasn't for another issue. It is also quite tight on the sides, despite being the Standard Fit (so-called wide). It could be that I have very wide feet, but I did hear others had the same issue.
Gladly, I purchased them with Amazon's free shipping and free return stamp. So I ordered the size 10, which I'm supposed to receive tomorrow in the mail.
With that said, my 9.5 pair was stupid light, clocking my scale at 6.8 oz. Despite the tight fit, I'm really hooked on these shoes. I'm hoping the size 10 will work for me because they look and feel phenomenal. Don't be afraid to order this, but do it at least a half-size bigger. I can update it here as soon as I receive the new pair.
By the way, I also just joined the drop for the size 10 here. It's the cheapest place to get the black version (it looks great too). And yes, they don't look like they will last, and that's why I want two of those. I figure I'm better off paying $100 for two ultralight pairs that combined will last as long as one $120 pair of heavy, reinforced shoes. Ironically, the sole of one of my (super heavy) Merrell hiking shoes is already becoming unglued after less than 20 miles of hiking. So yeah, I'm not too worried about the durability of these shoes.
A couple more things: Don't plan to kick any rocks with these shoes. It will hurt; there's barely any protection. And remember to order a half-size up. You'll be ready to fly in the trails.
loercaseI have the Roclite which has a looser mesh so I expect the Terraclaw would resist a bit better. That being said I wear mine in all weather and they hike dry pretty quickly. For real bad and colder weather I wear a pair of Dexshell Waterproof Thermlite Socks, sometimes with a liner.
Wish I hadn't jumped on this drop as early as I did. Missed all the comments about the sizing being smaller, and ordered the Men's size 9 US (Black/Red/Grey color). I really like the color, and shoe overall, but turns out I need a 9.5 : |
A little disappointed, since I used the cm & inch measurements of my foot to determine size as well.
Anyone have a 9.5 that might have done the opposite? Or would happened to miss the drop and doesn't want to pay amazon $120 for a pair of the black ones?
Dropped Massdrop a line, as suspected, they won't help because they submit a bulk order with whoever is the vendor (brand direct or not), so sizing changes won't happen after a drop.
knarHuh, that's strange that they wouldn't change it because, as you said, they submit after the drop is over which as of today (22 Mar 2017) is in 5 days, giving them enough time to change it. That sucks though.
Most Amazon reviews say get a full size bigger than your size, but they could be referring to UK size rather than US size. Since there are no returns here, I wanted to hear it clearly from someone here who bought this exact model. Apparently the different Inov8 models fit very differently. I have extra wide feet, and I've heard these are one of the widest shoes from Inov8, but someone already posted in this forum that they fit snug. Does anyone here have experience with this exact shoes?
LeoKauaiI normally wear a size 11. I ordered a size 11.5 US and they're just barely too small. My toes were sometimes hitting the front of the toebox after a walk, so I can only imagine it getting worse on a trail. I think I'm going to get a size 12 US this time.
TL,DR: The Amazon reviews probably mean a full size up from your US size, ignoring the UK sizing, because they just plain fit small.
TSwansonRevisiting this... My 11.5 size is actually probably the best fit for me. I haven't tried a size 12, but I'm thinking the smaller fit was the best with thin socks.
