A New Take on a Classic Design

The monkstrap has experienced a revival over the last few years. Perhaps because this versatile shoe can be worn with jeans and trousers alike, or because its buckle-and-strap construction is eye-catching without being gaudy. Or maybe it’s just that fashion is cyclical. After all, the shoes have seen varying degrees of popularity since they originated centuries ago in Europe’s old monastic order. But while double monkstraps have been the dominant design of late, J. FitzPatrick’s Fauntleroy offers the single monk—a more streamlined interpretation of these classic shoes.

Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice of size as well as color/leather: Black Calf, Brown Suede, or Gold Museum Calf (+$20).

Goodyear Welted, Made in Spain

Featuring one strap instead of the more popular two, the Fauntleroys can be worn with long trousers to hide the buckle, or with cuffed pants or jeans to show it off. Available in black calf, brown suede, or gold museum calf, these Goodyear-welted shoes are assembled on J. FitzPatrick’s LPB last, a soft chisel-style last that adds to the versatility of the shoes. They feature a single leather flex sole and are fully lined with leather.

Lead Time & Sizing Information

Due to the lead time required to secure the leather from the tanneries in Europe and build the shoes in Spain, these shoes have an estimated lead time of 3 to 4 months. Note that although the lead time is substantial, it is competitive with made-to-order runs from other high-end shoe companies; for instance, brands like Alden, Alfred Sargent, Edward Green, and Gaziano & Girling more often have lead times of 6 to 18 months.

These shoes generally fit true-to-size. For those who are familiar with the TMG last (like the Magnolia), this style fits just a touch roomier. Probably not enough to warrant sizing down, but if the TMG is loose on you it may be worth considering. To convert US to UK sizing, subtract one from your US size. For instance, if you measure size 10D US on a Brannock device, your UK size would be 9E UK. For more information on sizing, see this page on the J. FitzPatrick site.
