Hey everyone,
Massdrop was offered the chance to share the prototype of a design with the community, but that wasn't clear to us and we didn't make it clear to the community. We got some good feedback here but it's clear that we jumped the gun on releasing this, so the vendor has asked that we suspend the drop for now and bring it back at some time in the future.
I would encourage members to remember that the spinning things world is pretty new and growing fast. In case it wasn't clear from the description, this is designed to be a desk ornament that is also a top, and something you can keep on your desk that doesn't obviously look like a toy - not the spinning top you buy to hit a new record spin time. Re: aluminum for weight: yes, true...but anything this big made of steel or brass/copper would be prohibitively heavy and expensive.
Thanks for all the comments, hopefully the vendor will come back to us with a final production version soon.

JonasHeinemanGreat response. And yeah we ain't too bright but aluminum is just so...
Now as a desktop mini-center-piece it wouldn't be so bad even if it was heavy as heck. At least you'll know it can be a paperweight.
Glad to hear we will see this back in a new way. Thank you MD and the designer.
