Have had a Greylock 3 for a couple years now and couldn’t be happier with my choice. Always warm enough, deflects rain droplets that ricochet off the ground during storms, stays snug in position all night. Hammock camping friends of mine who went with cheaper options always say they are jealous of the Jacks R Better. I can safely say if you’re looking for a nice workhorse of an under quilt for your typical hammock setup, this one will not disappoint.

I’ve been waiting for ages for a decent underquilt to show up on Massdrop but this is too warm for my usual conditions. Grrr

NickospickoA lot of people go with a low temp UQ and vent. It gives you some versatility, and you can always vent. This is a good thread on hammock forums talking about just that.... https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php/113477-What-temp-underquilt-should-I-get

For torso-length, does one typically have a foam pad piece they'll put under legs?

I have a greylock 3. I am 5’10”. The length works out for me that it is only not under my head and feet. On my head I wear a hat, which you have to do anyway because top quilts don’t have a hood. I have a sit pad that I put under my feet in the foot box of the topquilt. I can get pretty warm so I like the shorter length because if I get too warm I take my feet out of the footbox to cool off, and not having the underquilt under my feet helps. It also packs up much smaller than a full length uq.

I was very skeptical of torso-length underquilts since most of my backpacking is in fall and winter, so the nights invariably are near or below freezing. JRB make excellent gear, and I've been using various quilts by them for 10 years. I have a JRB winter nest and a Mount Washington 4. I was gifted a Warbonnet Outdoor Winter Yeti and used it on a recent 4 night trip in GSMNP where windchill was in the single digits the entire time. The storm that brought in that weather was unexpected, so I thought I was under geared. The Yeti + Z-lite pad kept me as warm as I'd ever been in my Mount Washington 4, and now I'm a torso-length quilt believer. I don't care so much about the weight, but the space savings is huge.
I'll be picking up this quilt and handing my Winter Yeti down to my son.
