libby.duncanI taught my 9 year-old grand daughter to sew. I went over basic tools, fabric (i.e. bolt, selvages, WOF) and how the sewing machine works (emphasis on safety around the needle). I gave her some squares to sew together, and helped her get used to the machine. 20 minutes is plenty long for the first lesson. Then - I let her look through some easy pattern quilt books, and though my stash, and she picked out a project and we started making it, with her doing all the sewing. I taught her to iron and pin along the way. She has finished her first quilt (she quilted it and bound it on the machine) and we are hanging it in a local quilt show next month. Good luck with your grand-daughter!
