Keep your beverages hotter for longer without springing for an ugly mug or thermos with these double-wall cups from JoyJolt. Available in two sizes, in sets of two or four, the cups feature a double-wall insulated construction of borosilicate glass Read More
I want to like the idea. I've tried them; I have a pair of the barrel-shaped ones, and I've had some Bodum double wall.
The biggest problem is they're VERY fragile. Glass is never gonna match steel, that's a given, but thick glass is at least a bit resilient. Double wall construction leads to very thin glass...haven't measured, but it seems thinner and lighter than, say, some of my Reidel stemless tasting glasses. That means it's rather fragile. I remember dropping a simple, stainless salad fork into the sink...and into a Bodum double wall. Shattered the bottom.
I absolutely wouldn't put them on the bottom shelf. I'd go further, and suggest "protecting" it with soft stuff surrounding it. I use plastic storage cups with screw-on lids...these are perfect.
I also agree that they're not great at thermal insulation. For me, the best trick is to use one of my heavy ceramic mugs, filled with plain water, then zapped in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. Doesn't have to boil; with a typical 11 ounce mug size, 2 minutes is fine. Point is, that gets the ceramic up to temperature before you add the hot liquid. The thermal mass of the ceramic is your friend here. (Obviously, the mug has to have a handle; double wall ceramic often passes on this.)
I purchased 4 of the 10oz mugs. One of which arrived broken, but Drop refunded the cost of one mug. They are cool to look at and use, but they don't provide significant insulation value over a regular mug. I suspect that is because the mug is not evacuated. The double wall concept really only works when there is a vacuum in the space, otherwise convection within the airspace conducts a lot of heat. I wouldn't purchase again until they are evacuated. It's old technology, so it should be easy to do. I think the glass would have to be a bit thicker though.
One other comment is that they feel delicate. You have to treat them like a nice wine glass as opposed to a coffee mug.
I love these, they have a handle because people like handles. As a general rule I never put double wall in the dishwasher, it's risky. Handwashing is super easy anyway.
I just ordered a set, hoping these are really dish washer safe, and don't get all scratched up in the dish washer. If they do, I would rather know NOW, so I can hand wash them. I have been waiting for something like this to come out... but could the admin who is running this PLEASE verify that these don't get scratched or cloudy in the dish washer? I know that it says they are safe in the dish washer, but I have a lot of (acrylic?) glasses that used to look cute, that are now scratched and cloudy. I hide them when company comes over, and I didn't buy them to hide them. Thank you. What ARE these made out of, exactly?
brenda52411Don't even try putting these in the dishwasher, even if it's boro. DO NOT. No one should expect double walled glasses to make it through the dishwasher.
