The sound is great, but the wearing experience is average
After years of lusting after a JVC woodie, my FW01 finally arrived. The sound is big, full, warm, and luscious – exactly what I have always wanted! However… I cannot get a good fit no matter what I do. There is a very acute nozzle angle that doesn’t seem to fit in what I thought were my normal ears. In fact, they fit better when reversed right to left! I also tried wearing them up, but once again they fit better wearing the right on the left side. Also, the cord plug is huge and extends up through the middle of the ear so the cord will not wrap around it!
I’ve been a huge fan of JVCs premium offerings for a while now so I come from a place of a bit of bias but also experience. These things sound amazing, particularly with hiphop, rock, Nu-metal and rap. The bass is rich and hard, mids are beautiful, and the highs have enough sparkle in them to balance out the sound while having zero sibilance. Guitars in particular sound great.
The build is also exceptional. These are a little piece of luxury in the hand.
They were too warm for my taste but it is subjective so if that is what you are looking for, great! Also these don't include spiral dots but something similar which is a bummer. Still listening experience was quite pleasant.
It's more detailed than the previous series, the 650 750 850, but it's a little tempered sound.
You can still feel the characteristics of wood well, but it has become closer to a more popular sound.
I bought these after quite a lot of research and hesitation to spend this much on IEMs. I'm glad I did.
Make no mistake - these are basshead all over. However, I found them to have a lot of detail and depth I've never heard before in IEMs (I topped out in the 100$-ish region in the past). I even found that some of my closed headphones don't come close. They can have that typical open-can effect of turning your head around because you thought you heard a sound from behind your shoulder. But it's always from the music.
You get plenty of tips and I found the foam ones to be the best by far. The foam seems to be of good quality and doesn't show signs of disintegration after 6 months of ~5 hours/week use.
I would have liked a more clever solution for the carry case, though. It's too cumbersome to always store them in there when on the move/putting them away for a while. I tend to carry them in my pants' pocket which just doesn't seem right for this price tag. Maybe this is just me though.
