I still need more listening time to do a full review, but these are everything you'd want from a JVC woodie. If you liked the HA-FW01 then jump on these. My only complaint is that they didn't include a cable wrap or clip, but the JVC website lists them as included accessories.

rhpot1991I'm in the same boat as you. My 1800s have spent maybe 75-100 hours burning in on a Plenue D in the drawer, but I just haven't had the time for listening time. From my limited ear time with them, they're a clear step up from the FW01s. Ditto on no wraps/clips. Some quick A/B with the FW01 (stock tips, stock cable, from the Plenue D I'm burning in with): the 1800 has cleaner, more detailed bass. Still plenty of bass quantity and impact. Mids are more natural/less recessed than the FW01s. The 1800s are brighter than the FW01s. All positive differences but plenty of similarities, being in the JVC Woodie sound. I don't feel like I was missing anything from the FW01 in the few songs I compared.

regalsobriquetA fellow Cowon owner, very nice. Sampling mine with a Plenue L. The depth of the sound stage stood out to me, I could have easily mistaken it for open backs there. I ultimately pulled a clip from another pair, which helped reduce the pull from the cord. With the 1800's being a bigger size I preferred this.

rhpot1991I love the original Plenue D for the forever battery life--and that makes it the perfect DAP for burning in gear. And long road trips/multiple flights/etc, anytime I need the most battery life and I'm not chasing absolute peak SQ. Which isn't to say the D has poor SQ--not at all. It's just got lower power output than most dedicated daps (much less dedicated amps), so I'm always hesitant to make notes with it because sometimes a little extra juice can really make a difference in SQ.

regalsobriquetHi @regalsobriquet, I've been enjoying the FW01 but of course I'm curious how these differ. On JVC's site, I couldn't really figure out what's different. Is it just a different driver? Looks like it's all wood in the 101 vs wood dome with carbon surround in the 1800. All the other components appear to be shared, so it seems like it's down to tuning, with the 1800 more focused on the presence region (this is their "concept" on JVC's product page). I'm not asking for you to talk me into or out of getting the 1800s, but my biggest reservation about the 01 is the overwhelming bass. If that's fixed in the 1800, I might not be able to hold myself back. 😅 Thanks for sharing your impressions!

toniidesu@toniidesu The HA-FDX1 might be a better fit for you, it has considerably less bass. I personally think the wood line is a lot better, but I also EQ my IEMs with less bass then my headphones. The body is different on 1800, larger and responsible for the wider sound stage. It uses their flagship driver as well, which has some things in common with the FW01.

rhpot1991Thanks! Any reason to prefer the X1 to the 01 or vice versa?

efarkouhImproves on the FW01 in just about every way. If you want the best sound signature in their wooden line then the FW1800 is the clear choice.

rhpot1991Thanks for that. Any comments about bass and staging?

efarkouhSound stage is great, if I didn't know any better I would think I was listening to open backs. The bass is pretty reminiscent of FW01 but more defined. I tend to EQ the JVC woodies down on bass out of personal preference, plenty of punch there without getting muddy.
