I'm 5'11" 180 lbs and wear a 44 suit jacket (my chest measures 44.5" and I typically need a 35/36" sleeve length on dress shirts). I have difficulty finding jackets that fit me correctly because I have very wide shoulders, long arms and a narrow waist. I do not want to be swimming in a XXL but I also do not want the arms to be too short. Any suggestions on size?

thwyld1I still think the XXL will be your best option. Your chest at 44.5" is already a bit too big for the XL (just keep in mind the sizing on these is a bit on the snug side) and since you have broad shoulders and this is a jacket you'll be layering with other pieces, you should be just fine with the XXL.
