Just an FYI to the site owners here..BIG mistake made in the description. 1095-Cro Vsn IS NOT. stainless steel. It is basicically a common CARBON spring steel alloy snd WILL rust like crazy if not kept oiled.

JimArtJim is exactly right. Sorry I didn't catch the mistake when reading the Description. 1095CV is an excellent steel for knife blades, but it isn't stainless. The added Chromium and Vanadium (Cro Van) do help make this modern 1095 more resistant to rust/corrosion, but it *will* still rust if not cleaned and oiled after use, especially use involving wood. There's nothing wrong with stripping the factory coating off either (as spotfire says he did above), but stripping it will make it much more susceptible to rust from even just holding it because of acidic and corrosive oils in your skin. The BK-21 that I have is made of the exact same steel and the edge rusted pretty bad after being used for whacking down small limbs and vines on my property, and then sitting around for a week or so before I looked at it again. I also have a BK-9 Combat Bowie that I stripped and polished, and it will start rusting within a couple of days if I don't clean and oil it after use, but that knife is an older Camillus model (as opposed to this Ka-Bar model) that used 0170-6 carbon steel instead of variants of 1095 that have been used since Ka-Bar took over manufacturing the Becker line.
This is a great knife, though I wouldn't refer to it as "huge" at 4.4" long, but in any case, like anything made of carbon steel, you have to take care of it to keep it in great shape. Even under relatively hard use you should be able to pass this knife on to your great grandchildren if you take care of it.

BlueTomWhat is your recommendation for oil? I have never owned a knife that required cleaning and oiling after use. Thanks.

HondaDirt14I use my knives often, so looking around for a specific type of oil that will protect the blade for a long time has never been necessary for me. I just use whatever I have on hand, which, for as long as I've been using carbon steel blades (blades that will rust), I've just grabbed the oil bottle out of my gun cleaning kits and spread a thin coat along whatever exposed metal there is. I have stripped the coating off of a couple of my carbon steel knives, so oil gets spread all over them. Knives that still have the coating just get oil along the edge. If you think your knife is going to sit around for long periods of time, you should research if there's a specific type of oil recommended for that kind of duty. If you take 'em out to play often though, any ol' oil will do.

HondaDirt14If you want to use it for cutting food, use an edible/ food grade oil. I hear coconut oil is great. I use a cosmetic grade jojoba oil, but already had it around. Nearly anything will do. Olive oil, canola, sesame, etc
