Sennheiser PC37X randomly goes bad after disconnecting the cable ?

Buying a new living room TV and looking for a decent sound system to support TV/Netflix/gaming/music etc. Wondering if this set is appropriate for such an application, given the headphone amp and usb DAC included (not sure if they would get much use). Roommate is looking at cheap soundbars, was trying to find a superior alternative at a decent price. Already have a satisfactory speaker/headphone setup for my desktop computer, so I would not use this set for that.
I should say I haven't heard these Kanto speakers but I have a set of Aperion 4B (4" analog stereo speakers) and a Boston Acoustics 8" sub that I had hooked up to a borrowed friends Kanto amp. It sounded good enough and was compact enough that I am considering purchasing one of these amps to run in a bedroom TV set up.
