This is off topic, but I was wondering about something mechanical keyboard related. Forgive my ignorace, but I've only viewed the community from afar so I don't know all the ins and outs. Why do people care so much about plates, specifically what color they are or what they look like? I understand the difference between PCB vs plate mounted switches, but what does it matter what the plate looks like if you can't even see it when it is obscured by the keys?
On some cases you can see the plates, some are simply a bottom you attach to the bottom with no sides, so you can get a cut away look at all the layers. Kind of similar to the pictures of a sliced earth in your old science text books =]
In those instances, getting a nice plate, or a nicely colored piece of PCB on these drops can be a real treat if you wanna pimp it out a little bit.
Some low-profile cases like the Tex ones actually allow the plate to be visible. Similarly, Cherry profile keycaps show more of the stem also, which in the case of the clear switch tops for the Gaterons, look better (IMHO).
