Should I get this or a Pok3r?

ninefiftyfiveDepends. Pok3r is more premium with aluminium case as standard, more programming features, traditional 60% layout and only comes in Cherry MX switches. This is cheaper, so a plastic case with a non-standard layout and a choice of Gateron or Cherry switches. It all boils down to personal preference in the end.

moukimokyuI like having the arrow keys available on the default layer. That's why I choose this one over the Pok3r.

moukimokyuThanks for the input! I really want to get this (price and the layout sort-of reminds me of HHKB JP), but I'm afraid that I'll have difficulty filling in the non-standard "Shift" key. I guess I could switch to DSA and have some wacky keycap setup, but I wanted to have some Tai-Hao PBT Doubleshots. Which one would you pick, factoring out cost?

Vortex324Same here :) I once had a Poker II with MX Clears that I sold after two weeks - I didn't realise how dependant I was on dedicated arrow keys until then!

ninefiftyfiveMy own personal preference is the KC64 - I've had a Poker II in the past but ended up selling it as not having dedicated arrow keys really didn't work out for me. Programming features aren't relevant to my usage right now and I'll be replacing the default case with an acrylic one I initially bought for the Poker that I wound up selling. Actually I nearly bought a KBT Pure Pro (another 60% board with dedicated back in the day and that had an oddly-sized spacebar (4.25 units or something like that) that was virtually impossible to replace. The Pure Pro went out of production before I could get hold of one, but by comparison this layout looks relatively straightforward - at least the keys are standard sizes! Someone else here (full credit to them) mentioned the 2u right shift keycap can be replaced by the 2u 0/Insert numberpad keycap, which has the same row height (last two rows in most profiles are identical height) so you could stick with DCS/OEM profile given enough 1u blanks. Also I like having the option of Gateron switches out of the box.

moukimokyuI am stuck in this dilemma. I really like mx clears but this is way cheaper. I can't use blues because of the noise but I'm not sure I like Browns. There's no gateron equivalent to mx clears that's available in this drop. Should I use go for the Browns? They'd be so light though

KeyboardEnthusiastI've heard that Gateron Browns are like a middle point between MX Browns and MX Clears. No idea about Gateron clears though.

moukimokyuThanks for the informative reply! I'll more than likely join this drop later. Just a few more questions. First off, how are Gaterons switches in comparison to MX switches? Also, do you plan on changing the keycaps, and if so, what will you go with? I might go with Think Different standard layout + DSA Granites, as this drop should come around late October, giving me time to wait for them to go back in stock.

fidgityGateron Clears are 30-35g and linear, like a smoother, lighter MX Red.

KeyboardEnthusiastYeah, not having a clear equivalent to MX Clears here makes things tricky. If you know you prefer a heavier switch, there's a chance Gateron Browns won't suit, but their tactile bump can feel more obvious to some (YMMV as always) than with an MX Brown, which you may find preferable. Many people find Gateron Blues to be noisier (louder, higher-pitched click) than MX Blues, so you can certainly rule them out if noise is an issue. Greens are heavier still, but noisier again. At this price point, I would be inclined to try out Gateron Browns, or maybe make friends with the nearest available soldering iron if possible.

moukimokyuI was afraid it would come to that. I didn't want to have to mess with changing switches. If that's the case I might as well buy gateron tactile clears or even zealios. Are you saying gateron browns are comparable to ergo clears?

ninefiftyfiveNo worries! Gaterons are regarded as smoother than Cherry MX, to a point where some MX switches can feel gritty or scratchy in comparison (for all the ones that have a direct MX comparison - the Gateron Clears offered here are very different to MX Clears, more akin to an MX Red but lighter & smoother. Gateron Yellows are linear and similar to Cherry MX Black). More direct comparisons here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/wiki/switch_guides#wiki_gateron_switches I haven't had much experience with them personally yet but I do have some Gateron Browns switches on the way for another keyboard of mine which I am definitely looking forward to.
As for the keycaps I like to keep defaults on for a little while at least, especially for atypical layouts like this where I need to relearn the location of functions & shortcuts, especially when I'm switching them out for blanks in some cases, but I'll definitely be switching them out eventually. I love the look of DSA for smaller boards like this, I wish the pro modifiers for Quartz were still available! But I might actually get this dyesub set from Geekkeys (http://www.geekkeys.com/white-dyesub-pbt-104-keyset-magenta-fonts/) and mix them with some white PBT blanks I know I have lying around somewhere.

KeyboardEnthusiastI can"t help you, it's up to your preference. This mk is new, no one can tell you about quality and if you want Cherry clears this drop ain't for you. I don't have a Pok3r, but if i wanted to go Pok3rstyle i would prefer a B.face: http://winkeyless.kr/product/b-face-x2-pcb/

moukimokyuI made post on Reddit about this, and someone pointed out that the LShift is .5u smaller. Overall, it seems like finding a complete Keysets for this is going to be too much of a pin

ninefiftyfiveI've two mks like this, your best bet might be keycaps with DSA profile like Granite, which has a 2u shift cap (childset) and the 1u shift is covered with a novelty keycap on both. The left shift is 0.25u smaller.

ninefiftyfiveThis is a very personal decision by ME which doesn't have to match your needs/liking. I would choose this one, if the possibility of onboard programability to make my own layer or switch right ctrl to altgr would be given. I could do this otherwise, but i don't want that, not having altgr at default is a nogo for me, but i still like 60% with arrowkeys. I've a heart for unusual layouts, which leads to other problems, but that's another story.
Again, this is ME, YOUR experience with a mk like this might be totaly different!

MakamiI may just sit this one out. How often do new drops come on Massdrop? (I'm new to this). I'm assuming there'll be another 60% drop in the near future, right?

ninefiftyfiveIf you go to the "Mainpage": https://www.massdrop.com/mechanical-keyboards/drops and scroll down to past/ended drops you can take a look and demand a redrop/request of items you like.
Popular drops often redrop once the last drop has been shipped, some, for whatever reason, are one time only. If the KC64 should fullfill your needs, maybe get it, the price, even though this is new and quality is unknown, is good.
Keycool so far by me isn't known to build/sell shitty mks, ok, let's not talk about Kailh switches, they seem to be doomed, whatever they're going to do/improve :)
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/kbparadise-v60-mini-gateron redrops every other day for example, just look around and read to get impressions.

MakamiThe nonstandard keycaps are pushing me away from purchasing the KC64. But what you're saying is that a random number of former drops will redrop every month? or so?

ninefiftyfiveYes, a lot of former items redrop regular, not every month, but often. If you see something you like, you can check for the date of the last shipment or posting. The longer it hasn't happened and the higher the amount of requests, the higher the chance to redrop "soon", but no guarantee!
