It’s much better than my first sleeping bag! Price is good, weight is not ultralight but also not the heaviest, and if you have 2 of the same size (which is *still* cheaper than most decent quilts) you can zip them together and make a double wide bag for the occasional couples camping. In your area, with a good sleeping pad, it would make a very good first sleeping bag.
I backpack 50+ nights a year, and I’ve shifted to hammocks and quilts (I am on the East Coast where trees are plentiful but flat open ground...not so much), but I would not be reluctant to carry this if I was still ground camping.

Would anyone recommend this to a beginner backpacker? Mostly doing weekend over nighters in the southwest where the temps are normally above 40*F year round. Not a fan of mummy bags and good quilts are out of my price range at the moment and this looks like a good deal, thoughts?

ScoundroulHonestly this looks like a great deal to me. I was thinking of picking this up for my brother who doesn't backpack a lot, but also hates mummy bags. Until I started going ultralight I carried a Big Agnes women's synthetic mummy bag which weighed the exact same as this bag and it honestly wasn't bad at all weight wise (and that bag was about the same price from a clearance rack!) Its just a few ounces heavier than say the Nemo Disco 30 which also has a nontraditional ie non-mummy shape. Its a little lighter than the Kelty Cosmic which is a touch warmer but also has a pretty aggressive mummy shape (lots of people start backpacking with the Cosmic.) Because its down, this will compress much better than a synthetic even at 600 fp and not eat up half your pack. The only other bags you could get at this price range are going to be synthetics and it will be hard if not impossible to find a synthetic the same warmth at this weight. And while I usually tell people to buy once cry one - like just shell out the cash for the $300 UL quilt...I would find tons of uses for this bag no matter what. I would absolutely take this car camping or to music festivals for example. And I would have been stoked to have this as my first backpacking bag.

ScoundroulDepends on how hot you sleep. The weight isn't bad at just above 2 lbs- like someone said earlier, it's not heavy but not light either. If you like to be warm, I'd say go for it. Otherwise find something with less fill to save weight. On colder nights you can just add wool socks and some warm clothes and you'd be fine with a bag rated for 35 or 40 degrees+. Ask me how I know.
