I really disliked this knife, its small for a Hinderer design, which made it feel weird in my hand. And the Assist mechanism is annoying as well. I thought this would be a good back-up that I could just leave in one of my bags, because I often opt to not carry my daily if Im going into the city, but it felt so junky that I didnt bother and sent it back.
But like others have said, it could be a dirt cheap gate-way knife if your are curious about the Hinderer design. I have a ZT0566, which is the perfect size for me, its a little bigger than this Cryo, and much heavier. The Assist bar is removable on the ZT's which is a must. One because it's illegal in my area to carry assisted knives and two, because it is like butter without it! I have not met an assisted knife that Ive liked. The main selling point for the ZT0566, for me, was because it was deassistable. Which btw- the Cryo is not. At least not without so major work.
The problem with these Hinderer knives are that they're not cheap. Which makes the this Cryo such a tempting purchase. But be warned: If your a tweaker like me, and you get this knife, you're going immediately want a better Hinderer. This purchase is going to cost a lot more than 23 buck in the long run! :P
Methheads were called tweakers because they tend to suddenly believe they can fix/alter or build further on electric appliances. So they got the name sarcasticly from the use Manhod knew
This is a fine entry-level knife to decide if you even want to carry a knife around. I removed the thumb studs by unscrewing them, they're too small to be useful and they snag on your pocket, so I'd just get rid of them. I got lucky and have a very well-centered blade with no QA issues. It's not fancy. It's on the heavy side, the assisted-open is polarizing, and the steel is basic 8cr13mov. But it's a good starter knife and makes a great beater carry.
It's a decent knife, very easy to sharpen due to the mediocre steel. The thumb studs are useless because the knife is so hard to open. I can only flick it open a few times before my finger hurts too much from the pressure and rubbing against the jimping when it finally opens. Removing the speed assist makes it a useless knife with no method of locking it closed, furthermore opening it is less than pathetic.
I'm tempted to return it to Amazon but it may not be worth the effort as it's still a decent knife for emergency situations.
jbinnerYeah, would be nice if we didn't have to ask. Amazon for instance is usually upfront about shipping issues.
In this case, I could imagine that there's an issue because Massdrop didn't actually charge extra for the upgrades.
I picked the G-10 option, which is supposed to be +$5, but was only charged $19.99 + shipping & handling + taxes. Wondering how they will deal with that.
