Product Description
From the folks who brought you the KeySmart comes the Bogui Clik Wallet: a compact and stylish way to consolidate your cards and cash. It will safely hold up to eight cards; just slide them in and wait for the click to make sure they’re secure Read More
Thanks everyone for keeping Massdrop honest. This is not the first, nor will be the last unlicensed product on Massdrop. But people like you who make others aware are the first line of defence for inventors and product designers. Patent trolls suck, but patenting something you worked on for years is the only way to keep others from profiting on your work.
If the DM1 is patent protected then they should be contacting KeySmart. It's not Massdrop's job to research and decide what is or is not patent infringement. The DM1 is rediculously overpriced and this appears to be a better design (everything in one product vs having to buy multiple separate, expensive, accessories). The KeySmart wallet is available on Amazon and I'm sure many other retailers so the only thing Massdrop has accomplished by cancelling this drop is force those of us that want the KeySpan version to buy elsewhere at a higher price. I don't see the point and the unexpected cancellation makes me less likely to purchase through Massdrop in the future.
Hi everyone -- Thank you for being patient as we gathered information on the Bogui Clik Wallet design. We have decided to cancel all orders for this drop out of respect for Decadent Minimalist Designs. Thank you to the community members who brought this to our attention. If you have any questions please contact customer support. Thank you.
kyleemjHi Kylee,
First, thank you and MD for your decision to cancel the drop out of respect for Decadent Minimalist Designs. The community and MD have struck a blow for all creators everywhere! Good on ya :-)
Erik Moon, DM1 creator, has been trying to contact MD. As of July 26, MD has not responded to his requests to establish contact and dialog. Is there something you can do in this regard?
Who knows, you may come to terms for a Decadent Minimalist Designs drop.
Thank you and regards.
Just got the email about last chance to join the drop. I am sure glad I checked the comments first. I can live without another wallet especially when it's a knock off of a current design.
Greetings Massdrop and Community,
Bottom Line Up Front:
* Respectfully request that Massdrop suspend this drop until potential patent infringement considerations are investigated / clarified.
* Recommending that MD’ers withdraw from this drop in support of the original creator and designer and to send a message about the type of community we aspire to be.
Below The Line Detail:
Just confirmed with Erik Moon, the original creator and designer of the product that’s the subject of this drop.
Erik implied there is no relationship with KeySmart / Bogui Clik Wallet and that he is not receiving any compensation / benefit / licensing fees, etc. from the drop of this counterfeit product.
Erik said that he has attempted to contact Massdrop about this drop, but has yet to receive a response.
I’m not representing Erik in any official capacity, but am expressing my opinion and preferences as a member of the community.
There’s at least two factors at play here: Ethics and Law.
Don’t want to get into a big discussion about these two, but suffice it to say this smells.
Put yourself in Erik’s shoes, who’s been working this product concept for at least 3 years.
Erik’s product was the subject of two successful Kickstarter projects and he’s attempting to build a business anchored by this product.
If you have a DM1 wallet already, you know that it’s a brilliant design. It’s the best metal card wallet made. You cannot get a metal wallet that is more simple, functional, and elegant than the DM1. And, there’s that satisfying click!
Simple, functional, and elegant does not mean that it wasn’t very hard work to bring the product to market.
This is the reason that Erik is in-progress of patenting the design, which protects his investment of time and money from copy cat counterfeiters that want to leverage his blood, sweat, and tears for their own benefit.
Patent and Trademark laws reflect in no small degree the ethical and moral sensibilities of our culture. We believe some things are unethical and laws are created to reinforce those beliefs.
For obvious reasons, Erik is not happy about this situation.
I’m not happy about it because it just stinks / rubs me the wrong way.
Here's another angle: Don't we, as a community, want to support creators / designers / makers that are passionately trying to realize a vision that requires significant sacrifices so that we can benefit from their creativity and hard work? We want their very best and they'll be more likely to make the effort if we support them in situations like this with our very best.
Let me conclude by saying that if this drop is allowed to continue to completion, I will withdraw from Massdrop. I’ve been a member since 2014 and really enjoy the service and community, but will not be able to continue to subscribe and support a service that, in effect, condones unethical behavior.
FYI, although this post may engender thumbs-up and down comments, I will probably not be responding.
Thank you for reading / listening :-)
Tusken.E.RaiderSorry for the delay. It's my understanding that Erik has been unsuccessful in contacting MD. As of July 26, MD has not responded to Erik's request for dialog. If you know who to "ping" at MD, we can try that. Thank you.
JOYCEfromNSSeeing as the literal people who made and patented this weren't aware of this product before (or at least those notified). I'd take a guess and figure it is like a lot of other machined metal products I've seen come out of China: factory that produces it completes it's initial purchase order by keeps manufacturing anyway, selling the finished goods to other buyers (or something related to the CNC program itself getting shared).
I can confirm that this product is EXACTLY the same design as the DM1. I have the one made out of carbon fiber and besides the money clip being a little different, the design of the actual card holder is 100% the same as the DM1 I'm holding in my hand. Only difference is material (carbon fiber vs aluminum)
SwiftySoulI'd say 'most stuff' is similar and not functionally identical to noteworthy products out there. When it comes to items with patents to infringe upon, the only time we see direct copies is when they are being sold and shipped straight from China, not US or EU vendors. This appears to have the KeySmart name attached (even through it isn't branded KeySmart on the item), which is a well-established company who has had drops of their other products here before.
Seeing as 'vendor' was mentioned, I'm beginning to think either KeySmart didn't know (with a third party machining it), or this vendor Massdrop is dealing with is simply associating it with KeySmart to make it seem legitimate.
