On Friday, 9/29/2017, my Kizer Vanguard V4423 Sovereign knife went from BREINIGSVILLE, PA to GROVEPORT, OH. FedEx estimates delivery (to me in Southern Oregon) on Saturday, 10/07/2017, by end of day. That's 10 days to go 2580 miles, from Ohio to Oregon; an average of 258 miles per day!
Extreme long distance ('Ultra') runners are cable of running/walking 100 miles in 24 hours. They call it racewalking. I know this to be a fact because I have a neighbor who used to do that very thing; run/walk 100 miles in 24 hours. And FedEx can't go more than 258 miles a day in a TRUCK?! Is that the best or the WORST that Massdrop can negotiate? Pathetic!
A race horse can top 50 mph. Horses that are bred for running (not racing) can hit 40 mph for extended periods. Along the Northern California/Southern Oregon coastline, towns are 27 miles apart. Why? Pony Express; 27 miles is about as far as a horse can run/gallop in a day.
Obviously, back then the Pony Express routes had fully rested horses, staged and ready to go, every 27 miles. If you assume that a Pony Express rider could ride for 8 hours a day (no idea if that's a long OR short day for a rider back then) on a horse running 40 mph, that's an average of 320 miles in 8 hours. That's 62 miles further further than the FedEx truck that's transporting my Kizer knife to me, here in Southern Oregon. During its 19 months of operation, Pony Express reduced the time for messages (mail) to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to about 10 days. They should bring back Pony Express and let THEM provide transportation for products purchased through Massdrop. It might not be much faster, but it certainly would be a LOT more fun to see a horse running down my street, with my knife in its saddlebags, than some guy in a boring FedEx truck!
