This is the first flashlight I've wanted to buy to collect instead of utility.

I’ve been looking for a dedicated “search light”. Mostly for rolling into off-road remote camp areas late at night and trying to find navigational elements like rock cairns or ribbons tied to trees inside of 100m range. Truck-mounted lights just don’t work as well as having something you can hang out the window. Any recommendations? I prefer something that does not rely on a bulky external power supply for recharging.

Does it use external charger or is it built in plug and play?

I'm surprised they still make/sell this model without even updating it as it's quite old - as evident by the XM-L2 LEDs in the unit and only producing 3450 lumens for its size. The model was pretty popular for on-screen uses thanks to its unconventional design, appearing in shows like Westworld and movies like The Hunger Games and The Mummy(2017). I'd be interested if Klarus stuck a USB-C port on it and used XHP-35 HI's.

Given the price and the extra bulk, in what way is this superior to flashlights of the conventional form factor? What's the beam throw distance for this

It is a cool form factor and the handle is probably convenient for Search and Rescue. Also it won't roll away when you set it down. It's an older design not technically superior to modern flashlights at a similar price point, and the battery pack is proprietary which is a huge negative. I think this is more for the flashlight collector than the person who uses flashlights of this type daily. According to reviews it is a throwy light but the 800 meter spec is probably highly optimistic, 3 individual reflectors aren't going to throw as well as one big one, but the form factor does lend itself to good cooling which is an issue on lights in this lumen class with extended use.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking. It's kinda cool, but doesn't really achieve anything
