Hey all. Sorta' new into the pen business and wanted to ask you guys about the EF nib on this one. I have a couple other pens, all F and I thought about getting one EF to practice my calligraphy, so I tried my luck with this one. But it feels bit scratchy and I was wondering if that goes away with time, or is it something specific to EF nibs or just to this pen and it's how it's suppose to be. Thanks much for clarifying me.

BrethAll nibs have a sweet spot, the finer the nib, the smaller the sweet spot, so you need to rotate the pen until you find it, unless it really has a scratchy nib; on the other hand while this looks like the same nib used on Safaris and Studios, the ones on my 4 Studios are smoother than on my 7 Vistas (demonstrator Safaris), so they might go through more quality control, as well as on this pen (but I'm speculating since I've never tried an Accent). The advantage of EF nibs on my Studios is that they show certain inks lighter than in other pens, which I like but you'd need to decide about...

SilvioIn comparison with larger nibs an extra fine is always going to give you a little more feedback. If this is your first gold nib, I wouldn't mess around...but....if you've got a paper grocery bag you can ( LIGHTLY AND ALWAYS INKED UP) do some figure eights while rotating the nib all around. Just a few times. Be careful, maybe find some videos. Err on the side of caution. My guess though is you just aren't used to the feel of an extra fine nib. Also gold will pick up the intricacies of your hand over time, so just regular use on nice paper will eventually smooth out a little. If after a bit you really think something is wrong, have someone who knows what they're doing look at it. If there is really some smoothing that needs to be done - or the tines are out of alignment - or whatever, they'll know. And you'll learn something. With nice pens the rule is go slow, and you'll pick it up as you go along. Maybe get some cheap pens and some cheap nibs and some mylar and micromesh. Play around when the stakes are low. Welcome to pen stuff!
