I’ve very tempted but… I have a Lamy al-star in vibrant pink and it functions poorly. Very scratchy when writing and the nib leaks ink all over itself. M nib not bad enough to drip all over the paper but not a fan. Been using it with the original blue cartridge that it came with. I have a Kaweco Sport Classic that is the same way. I actually have the Lamy apart right now because the ink was clogged because I didn’t use it. I just tossed it in a draw and abandoned it. I’m new the fountain pens. If it wouldn’t have been for a right choice painting company with a Bock nib in F I would have probably not perusing this hobby so much, I love that pen. Not sure If I got a lemon with the Kaweco and the Lamy. I'm tempted to try again here.

ASpathaThis is very unusual, I have several safari fountain pens, not one of them leaks or is scratchy, this sounds like you have a defective nib. I say go for it, these are a great fountain pen for a very reasonable price.

dnoblettIs it worth contacting lamy about it, Or kaweco? I'll see about posting a picture of the nib with the mess.

ASpathaI’m sorry you got a lemon, but Lamy has a flagship store in New York, and you might want to give them a call to see what they say. I’ve got almost every pen Lamy makes, including the Dialog 3, the 2000, the Studio, inter al., and Al-Stars and Safaris in every color they’ve made over the past decade, and I haven’t had a bad experience with any of them. I’m a fountain pen enthusiast, and I don’t want to brag about the expensive pens I own, but I’m seldom found without a Safari in my pocket. They write well, and I’ve pulled the cap off a Safari after a month, and it started right off. You shouldn’t have to suffer with a bad pen, and it might be worth the nickel to phone Lamy to see what can be done. In the meantime, for $22, you can get a nice-looking pastel Safari—in fact, I just got one in each color.

ASpathaProbably just a bad nib, it happens. Their nibs for Al-star/ safari are not expensive so probably easy to just replace it, but make sure you watch some videos because it can be tricky removing the nib (I've broken a couple pens doing it).

ravkesefI wish I had that kind of cash flow to drop on a pen. I think I might sit this drop out and lean more on the lamy studio foutain pen which I'm assuming you most likely have, being such of fan of the company. Unless you have an alternate experience with the pen? I'm not the biggest fan of pastel colors, I did get a pink pen to be honest it's all about that $ and I got a good deal on it. As far as the store in New York I'll give them an email and see what they say, I've only had the pen for a few months.

ASpathaThe Lamy Safari and Studio use the same nib, so it's really just ergonomics and aesthetics between them.

WhenKittensATKReally?!? So exorbitant price just for the sake of it. Meh I'm stupid and have no self control I ordered the blue (F) and the metal finish (EF) from the drop. If they suck I'll never by another Lamy pen again. Well see. Thanks for the info Kittens.

PenChick87Lamy offers lifetime backing on their pens, for $10 shipping. So I may try that.
