NicktheHeroOf course it's going to be made in China--or some other (fill in the blank) country where labor is cheap and worker protections are minimal. I mean--you are here looking for deal aren't you?
I find it ironic that half the people shopping on MD are complaining "item-whatever" is too expensive, and the half are complaining "item-whatever" is made in China.
You'd be surprised at the prices 76-count pen display cases made by Italian Ferrari mechanics and Swiss Watchmakers are going for these days. And don't even think about the ones made by out-of-work GM assembly plant workers, or those that ex-Appalachian coal miners are hocking these days (oh buddy, some really crazy prices there).
Nope, looks like you're gonna have to stick with The Peoples Republic of Half the Shit in Your House, if you want a screaming good deal on a 76-Pen, Mahogany display case, these days.
UPDATE: I actually decided to visit Lanier's website to find out exactly where their stuff is made, and as best I could tell (or as best they were tell'n, anyway) they claim everything is made in "Northern California." The don't say it very clearly, but that's the suggestion anyway. Color me skeptical. Interesting company though, they make a ton of stuff from wood--here's a quote from their site discussing their selection--read it and then tell me if it makes the "where" issue any clearer in your mind...
"Exotic Woods Give Your Custom Pen Its Own StyleIf you ever dreamed of owning a custom pen made of exotic wood, now you can own any of the hand turned Lanier wood pens. You can choose from a wide range of exotic woods from the Dark Continent of Africa to the exotic Orient, or the frontier forests of the United States or Outback of Australia for your wood pen.
You can select to have your very own Lanier Pen made from any of our family of woods offered in our Wood Collection including..."
I'm not sure we still refer to Africa as the "Dark Continent" these days, or that we consider any portion of the US a "frontier" any more.
Frankly, the whole site smelled a little "fishy" to me...
