I'm new to Massdrop and my first purchase is discounted by 50% over what I see elsewhere, this one... not so much. Do you guys even check the available prices from other sources before you set up these drops??? Someone dropped the ball on this one. Keep trying though and maybe MD can do better with the diamond stone set.
The USA is only 4.3% of the world population, I wish Americans would stop going on about how it's cheaper on Amazon or Walmart or whatever, I can't find it cheaper than Massdrop.
rthorntnDitto: Whoever said it, then either you're not looking hard enough or you're living somewhere unreasonably expensive. Massdrop only on rare occasions produces a bang up bargain. Most of the time its about maybe getting products that otherwise are hard to find, seeing something that is novel or new, or getting a item produced only for Massdrop. If you cannot find it cheaper, don't blame my citizenship
rthorntnI find Drop to have pretty good prices when compared to Canada... as long as they don't screw up the shipping charges. I have happily purchased several items from Drop before.
But, NEVER once have I wished Americans would stop pointing to cheaper sources! Sorry, but that is just a silly ask.
Get one, it’s great sharpening system. But remember to get the stand as well. Also get some diamond stone and the sapphire one for mirror polished finish
massdrop01Love the sapphire stone. But I've been using a Lansky sharpening system for something like 25 years now, and I've never had a stand. I have no problem at all holding the blade and guide in one hand, and the stone in the other. At least for pocket knives, that's always worked perfectly for me.
Hi guys, just a heads up on sharpening:
Regardless of which sharpening system you use (I use rods or free hand india stones), DO NOT use 70 grit or 120 grit on your knives. If your knife is that badly damaged, send it out for repair.
70 and 120 grit will chew your steel up. The steel will shape fast but you're removing a lot of material. Once experienced, you'll find that most sharpening can be done with a couple quick, and few strokes with 400-600, and some stropping. Rods work wonders for touch ups.
The Lansky Deluxe Five Stone Sharpening System is widely available on numerous sites, and has been around for quite some time.
The final delivered cost between Massdrop, and other sites is very similar, and the historical range has basically been in the low thirties to the mid forties for several years...
For example, the delivered cost from Massdrop is currently $36.49, and most individuals will not currently pay any sales tax when purchasing on Massdrop.
Amazon offers the same product for $33.19 delivered, plus sales tax if applicable, which in my area is 6.5% additional, so $35.35 total, which is still a bit better than Massdrop, and you won;t have to wait very long to receive it. If you have Prime, you will receive it in two days with second day free shipping.
Walmart has the Lanky system for the same price ($33.19) as Amazon, but you must spend at least $35 to get free shipping, so perhaps you can add a small add on product to your order, or simply just drive to the nearest Walmart, and pick up the Lansky system for no additional cost, except again I have to pay the sales tax of 6.5% in my area, so basically the exact same price as Amazon on 5/25/2018.
In my case, I have numerous Walmart stores withing a few minutes drive of my home, so $35.35 which includes the sales tax, would be the best deal, at least for me, and I can get my $20 oil change, and pick up a gallon of milk, and some bananas while I am there. LOL
You can also find the Lansky Deluxe Five Stone Sharpening System on EBAY for $35.49, (delivered) with free shipping and you probably will pay no sales tax, so EBAY looks like the best deal if you don't want to leave your house.
I'd love to see the Lansky Deluxe Five Stone Sharpening System at a sub $30 price delivered, say like $25.00, but so far no luck.
