What do most people mount the rig on when using it to sharpen? I see Lansky sells some of their own C-clamp designs, but I'd rather find a budget alternative I can source anywhere

JakeSizzleIf you have nothing, you can simply hold the base in your hand. I've also seen people use a vice, and I believe Lansky sells a freestanding version of the mount.

JakeSizzleI always hold the base in my hand, too. Pretty easy--you just have to pay attention!

JakeSizzleI just hold the knife handle or the clamp itself. I recommend taking a picture of the knife in the clamp to align it the same way every time. I also use a washer to tighten the screw. The screw, on mine at least, has a rather wide flathead slot. The top to the philips head (flathead was the extra) stripped out a little so I switched to the flathead.
