This is okay, a step up from pull sharpeners (or just not sharpening your knives which seems to be the choice of way too many people). It works better if you keep the rod fixed in one location in the guide hole. For instance look at the dude's hands in the picture, if he moved his thumb up to the rod and pressed it to the left it will work more consistently. It takes a little practice to use this thing optimally. The better guided sharpeners are more consistent and stable, and of course more expensive.

awkRight, but with some practice this system works well and saves a lot of money.

awkThe dude with the red bracelet is displaying a remarkable shortage of common sense. He has the rod attached completely upside down which can never provide constistency, the whole point of these designs. The video has the rods assembled properly, and flashes the correct way to 'align' them. He's also holding the stone at the dangerous end, which aside from risking stains, also 'cantilevers' the assembly, causing even more alignment problems. A few have mentioned their preference for Spyderco Sharp maker or Turnbox style. I think those systems are easier to master with a nice steep learning curve. Excellent solution for Mom® units. They're great for quick touch ups too, and I never could get the hang of free handing on a bench stone. The Lasky controlled angle styles offer greater versatility, more choices of abrasive, more choices of angle. I prefer these systems for blades that are worth an investment of time...like a mirror polished secondary bevel and a perfectly centered primary.

The Lansky system is an excellent setup to practice patience and achieve results far beyond actual ability. I rather dislike the aggressiveness of diamond stones, but this might be a nice supplement to my growing kit. The plastic box should be discarded as packaging, it's seriously terrible. I prefer the GatCo clamp, and having an extra is nice. GatCo stones, however, are useless. http://a.co/cHqfEbF
