is the heater of a broken Yihua 936. Due to the broken heater and the lack of thermocouple connection to the heater that resulted from the cheap, thin and open core ceramic breaking, this iron overheated on a 15 year old and produced this result:

That is melted FR4 fiberglass. Had this teenager (who, mind you, is brilliant, but had no idea what was going on) continued using the iron or had he left it on in this state unattended, it would have melted itself and lit on fire. That is why I designed this kit.

ming.geekhackers.orgAre you trying to say that all soldering irons below $130 are poor quality?
>That is why I designed this kit.
I think the proper response to faulty soldering irons is to make a guide of reliable makes and models of soldering irons, not a full-blown soldering kit.
(Yes, I know this kit includes a lot of things, but all one needs to solder are solder and a good soldering iron, and I'm fairly confident one could find suitable replacements for everything in this kit on Amazon for a fraction of $130).
Please don't take this as an attack, I do like the idea in principle.

ming.geekhackers.orgYou caught my eye, and immediately disappointed me within about 5 seconds of checking the price. This is so unbelievably overpriced and not worth it at all. This is not the way to go about learning to solder. This is meant for people who want a nice kit. There is no reason to try and use any of this on a first project.
Long story short, I'm not buying it. Make a kit in the 50$ range and I'll consider it.

ming.geekhackers.orgok so a $16 cheap chinese knock off iron broke (its actually the cheapest iron out there) you can get a 30$ to 40$ adjustable iron that will last a decades no need for this rip off
