One of the larger and more functional tools in Leatherman’s lineup, the Signal has been a hit for years. Offering 19 tools inside its compact and rugged frame, it’s ready for anything that may cross your path. Featuring a high-carbon 420 stainless steel combo blade, it can just as easily slice through rope and twine as it can an apple or a pack of trail mix. Among the other tools on the Signal? A fire-starting ferro rod, a diamond-coated sharpener, a host of screwdrivers and wire cutters, multiple wrenches, and a safety whistle. Plus, most tools can be opened and operated with just one hand, giving you freedom to multitask. Of course, like every other product in Leatherman’s formidable collection, it carries a 25-year warranty—not to mention it comes with a nylon sheath.

A mechanical engineer by trade, Tim Leatherman was always good with tools. But it wasn’t until a budget trip to Europe in 1975—when he had to constantly fix his old Fiat—that he realized just how lacking some could be. Upon returning home to Oregon, Leatherman began designing a tool that could fit in a pocket and tackle any job that came his way. After years of refinement (and unsuccessful business pitches), he finalized the design for the Original Leatherman Pocket Survival Tool: a mini toolkit built into a 5-ounce, 4-inch frame. The success of the PST laid the groundwork for dozens of tools to come, and paved the way for the pocket multi-tool’s rise to popularity. Today, all Leathermans are produced in Portland, Oregon; tested in the mountains and rivers of the Pacific Northwest; and backed by a 25-year guarantee.
