I don't think it's fair to say that noticing the backlight bleed is a "placebo effect". First of all, I've seen pictures of fairly bad backlight bleed even with normal content displayed. Not to mention that one guy with the obvious purple splotch!
Secondly, I don't think a black screen is some sort of ridiculously rare scenario. A lot of content involves mostly black screens: horror movies with dark scenes, sci-fi shows with starfields in space, text/credit rolls, etc. And not just videos, but gaming as well (Doom, FEAR, Mass Effect, etc).
I think it's far more likely that some people are getting great screens, other people are getting bad screens, and yet others are getting everything in between. Don't assume everyone got one similar to yours unless you've gone over there and seen it in person--it's really unfair to those people.
That being said, it sounds like LG is standing behind their product and that the commercial support we are getting is heads and shoulders above the consumer model-- a consumer model which retails for a lot more than this drop and has a much shorter warranty. This is a solid drop! I missed it the first time around and am glad to see it back.
