We’ve got several Blu-Ray players in the home, and occasionally pull out a title from our relatively extensive DVD & BR collection. However, we have completely stopper buying any new discs, and I don’t think I have any 4K titles. My wife says It’s just simpler to stream everything now.
Curious what everyone else here thinks: Are we looking at the death of physical media? Even at $180.00, it doesn’t seem like a prudent purchase unless you already have an extensive 4K collection that you can’t enjoy currently. I’m regretting all the money we have poured into physical media over the years. And the resell value is almost as bad as old VHS - cents on the dollar. What do you think?

glennacMy access to streamable content might be a bit limited in Canada compared to the US, but I’d wager half of our DVD collection isn’t easily streamable on one of the major platforms. If you’re into art-house or more indie stuff (or just gems that have fallen out of fashion) you might be out of luck.
Qualitatively streaming will catch up very soon, but quantitatively it has a ways to go

glennacI have been impressed with the video quality of streaming UHD. However, the soundtracks are typically basic Dolby Digital. I have an 11.2 setup, so it's worth it to me to buy 4k discs, just so I get the Atmos and/or DTS:X bitstream. My receiver can upmatrix even two channels into 11, but it's not the same. I suspect I am in the minority of consumers, as going to 11 channels with four in-ceiling speakers was a tedious (and costly) upgrade, and I worry that physical discs will disappear soon. I think most people are just more interested in video than audio.

Is this a superior 4K player to the Xbox one X?

I didn't want to deal with waiting lol.
I have a ps4 pro so I didn't feel buying another console that had games I could just buy for my PC.
On top of that fact of with all the issues with it at the time (Dolby vision, Dolby atmos, playback compatibility) I don't have that issue with my sound bar as it's newer_ish and supports dts/dd and has dtsx. Unfortunately it doesn't have dolby atmos but dtsx does make up for it quite a bit.

JasonM1I bought a one S just for the 4K bluray player. Sold it once good players became affordable, don’t miss it at all. I bought a Sony UBPX800, and it had a much better picture out of the box than the One S. Wish I had a LG though to match the Lg OLED tv, but I guess now I have a Sony 4K Blu-ray player that matches my PS4 Pro. Wish it was only one device!

Many MKV files contain embedded subtitle files. Some MP4 come with a separate subtitle file, e.g. .srt. Does this unit support such files? This would be the primary deciding criteria for me to purchase this unit to replace a computer player.

Best buy has a pretty good deal for this player going on right now. 199 for the player, 3 UHD Blu Ray movies of your choice (with some in Dolby Vision), and a Logitech universal remote. It brings the effective price of the player below 100.

As of 2/20/2019, Amazon is currently selling the LG UBK90 (2018 model w/ Dolby Vision) for $175.22, and free two day shipping for Prime members. So yeah, great player, not the best price.

There's no indication in the specs as to the unit's audio resolution...Being that it's a Blu-Ray player, it should handle 24/96 Pure Audio discs but will it decode discs with resolution up to 24/192, or WAV and FLAC files via USB of the same (or greater) res? Also, for those thinking about DSD support...well, seems like not from this box. :-(

No automatic refresh rate setting? I had zeroed on this player until I read Wirecutter's roundup: "When playing back discs, you have to manually choose between 24p or 60p refresh rates. Other players change automatically depending on content to avoid judder, so with the LG you might see motion artifacts if you leave it in the wrong mode. This is a bewildering design choice because it requires you to have deep knowledge of video playback settings in order to watch a movie properly." Has anyone confirmed this?

jlgomez2667I didn’t see DTS:X but Dolby Atmos can be streamed out to your receiver (No decoding of course)
