Product Description
With the Aether R Universal-Fit IEM, Lime Ears had a clear goal: to create earphones that sound like an acoustically treated sound system, subwoofer included. Driving the Aether R sound are six balanced armatures per channel, two of which are engineered to act as subwoofers, adding body to the lowest frequencies Read More

OOh, @LimeEars on Drop. I have read a few good comments online, but never tried them myself (and somehow I always missed seeing a full review). The nebula shells (and marble!) are very attractive looking. Maybe we’ll start seeing more reviews now!

I particularly liked the white marble... the only CIEMs I had made so far, I got customized with white zebra wood, so I’m a fan of the look! A bit more neutral of a look while wearing them, as well.

Seriously? $1099 for IEM using 2-pin connectors? Hard NOPE. These are pleasant looking, may sound nice, and have a great set of accessories, but I'd rather spend that money on custom IEM with MMCX or put it towards something which will last longer... like a pair of Martin Logan ElectroMotion ESL.

Probably half of the high end iem manufactures are using 2 pin connectors. (EE, 64 Audio and plenty more) what makes you thing that MMCX connectors don’t fail?

It's not about MMCX connectors not failing, but that is reduced since they are a standard size. With 2-pin, their tolerance is small and non-standardized so you can damage the insertion jacks when using cables not provided by the manufacturer. Many won't warranty damage either since it's "user error" for not using the proper cable with the proper Lin size. I know for a fact Noble has language about this for their IEMs and a few others. That, and all housing for 2-pin aren't universal - some are flush and others have a shroud/housing. Again this isn't universal and presents problems. MMCX doesn't have these particular issues and they also swivel to allow for a greater range of movement for the individual (the same applies to headphones that swivel or not greatly impacts user comfort). Personally, I think it's just preference. I have a 7-year old pair of Shure SE215s that are 7 years old with the stock cable and don't have any issues with them. And they've even survived a trip in the washing machine. I think it's all a heavy dose of YMMV. 🤷‍♂️

Suggest lime ears and massdrop start at a much reduced promo price to get a rep and strong following like noble. To crack this market you need to build brand and sacrifice some margin at least in the short term to build community reviews. 1.1k too much.

Sure, I'll keep it in mind. I've met discussions including graphs about Solaris for now, which is UIEM only. But, as @jaydunndiddit mentioned, with the current state and amount of measurements, maybe it's too early to draw sudden conclusions (I didn't really dig into the subject, however CFA certainly tarnished its reputation in the light of recent events).

I can’t really make a fair judgement on CFA: the sharp angles on their shells made them uncomfortable for me to wear, so I haven’t done research on them apart from seeing so many people compare them to the Noble Kaiser, and say favorable things about both while the Andromeda cost less (and I love the Andromeda green). The nebula color for this drop looks really cool, and the universal form factor/smooth body has me interested enough to look into reviews and the tech used a bit more. Headfonia’s review looks promising.

https://headfonics.com/2019/08/lime-ears-aether-r-review/ Headfonics suggests these are the sixth best iem you can buy, and far cheaper than the other options.

Well, most top-end IEMs (and yes, universal-fit ones included) are priced like this, or higher... So it's not much of a surprise, really.

No carbon fiber shell/green logo combination (a la Model X). Do all options come with default gold logos? I may consider a black marble/white marble combo, but not sure how I feel about the gold logos.

I have to admit they are super cool, even just for the mechanics for how they work! I wonder if they save space compared to some other speaker options out there as well? I heard some Martin Logan’s at a Best Buy/Mongolia some years back, but that was before I really started training my ears, and I can’t really remember anything specific about the sound. By the way, possible suggestion for the neighbor issues. Invite them over every once in awhile to listen with you! If they enjoy too, and you don’t listen at inconsiderate hours (that’s what headphones are for!), they probably won’t mind.

Yeah, some years back I spent some time with an older generation (the Aerius) at one of the Magnolia shops that wasn't in a Best Buy. They were are absolutely the cats meow. Wide angled electrostatic with woofers to fill in the missing bass. Crystal clear sound delivered with potentially face-melting force. There is something extremely sexy about the clarity of e-stat sound in loudspeakers. One can close their eyes and almost feel like they're in the venue alone with the band. You can get similar sound from e-stat cans, but they lack the full body experience you get from loudspeakers paired with subwoofers. I'm likely to be getting a set of the ESL sometime in the next few months. They're perfect for my space and TEAC AX-501. As much as I want a pair of Neolith, palatial and huge my place ain't. Well, that and there would be the temptation to upgrade the amp stack to something that can push the full 1300w the Neoliths top out at... and at that point we're looking at an additional breaker and the supporting wiring. Bleh.

I may some day! But I sort of just lost my job and I’m trying to take the opportunity start my own business, so buying two may need a bit of a wait. If all goes to plan though, I’ll have two and many more IEMs in the future, and one day find fit nirvana. I’m sure many want “fit nirvana!” For the record, I have heard many IEMs that were hugely impressive for sound quality. I just have easily irritated ears, physically, and they also make a lot of ear wax, or at least they don’t naturally drain the wax as easily as others. (left ear especially).
