Jazz1You actually don't...Though your system will get the most benefit from a DAC because it cleans things up. Your Mac's internal DAC (sound card, likely integrated on motherboard like the laptops) isn't the greatest. So an amp will only amplify imperfections, etc. However, you could plug the Little Dot I+ right into your iMac's line out. You simply need an RCA to 3.5mm cable. That said, I have mine hooked up to a Dragonfly USB DAC (same cable to hook that up). You can get the older generation for as low as $75-80. The newer one apparently also works with iPhone. I haven't really looked into it much. It's a very worthwhile DAC in my opinion because of its convenience. It also amplifies! Though whether or not that's enough to drive the headphones will depend on those headphones. The Little Dot I+ is a MUCH more powerful amp and of course there's the tubes that can further adjust the sound signature. If I were to start with one, I'd start with a good USB DAC - you may find it to be enough...The hard part is you might not know that til trying them all. This is a nice little amplifier (I got it off Amazon, sorry Massdrop - it was only an extra $10 given the shipping was free from prime and it was free overnight). I would recommend it due to it's cost and ability to swap out the tubes. It's fun. However, I think a good DAC is far more important if you don't have one yet.

tom_mHi tom_m, I also have a Dragonfly v1.5 that I've been using straight from an iPhone 6. When you connect the Little Dot, do you turn the volume all the way up on the phone/DF and control volume with the Little Dot?

Mark3DYes, maxing out the volume on system instructs the Dragonfly to turn to "line-out" mode.
