I picked up this Little Dot from the previous drop just a few months ago. I have it connected to my audio system's monitor out. My primary use for this HPA is so that I can listen to vinyl but not through the speakers.
I've used both Mr Speakers Alpha Prime and Hifiman HE-560s and I enjoy them both very much with this HPA. The Alpha Prime's are more efficient and I have the volume control at about 10 o'clock. The 560s need the volume at about 12 o'clock. I notice a lot of background noise if I go past 12 o'clock. This could be the tubes currently installed. Since I've not yet started my tube-rolling campaig
For the money, I like this little unit a lot. I'm still waiting for the delivery of a Light Harmonic Geek Tube HPA that I backed in an Indiegogo campaign. While that remains at large, I just wanted to get something going so I could enjoy my vinyl collection at times of the day when I don't want to disturb anyone
@jerlad I am driving my Alpha Dogs though the Little Dot Mark2, and I have to turn the dial all the way to 2 or 3 pm position for sufficiently loud levels for my liking. I did not change the default gain setting, which are supposed to be set at high gain., and have original power tubes and JAN5654W driving tubes. AKG K-340 also require a pretty high volume level setting to sound good. I am curious if the difference between your Alpha Primes and mine with Alpha Dogs on the same amp is due to the difference between the two headphones (I always assume they had similar sensitivity) or due to the amp settings, etc.
@jerlad Figured it: the default settings are ON, thus low gain. I changed it to ON for 1, and OFF for 2 (second highest gain) and now the Alpha Dogs are much easier to drive!
I opened up my little dot for the first time a few days ago to find that its dip switch settings were ON for both "dips" on both switches. Therefore, there may be a difference between the Dogs and the Primes. I went to mrspeakers.com to find the specs, but I was not successful. My next step would be to check headfi.org
I set both dips to OFF to experiment. I am listening to determine the level of background noise
