Glad to see this awesome little OTL tube amp is back on Massdrop. BIG fan! Connected to a Grace Design m920 (no headphone amp slouch in and of its own), the sound through the LD MK III to a pair of HD650 cans can only be described as warm, smooth, and delicious. Think of your music wrapped in sweet, warm caramel.
Although not absolutely necessary, upgrading to Mullard 6AK5W (CV4010/M8100) matched driver tubes tightens up the low end, widens the sound stage, and crystallizes the high end. Well worth the $45 USD upgrade.

l was recommended (headfi) the Yugoslavia 6HM5 instead of the Mullard. Much cheaper, same results/quality it appears. Warmer sound than stock. l was also recommended the Russian Voskhod 6J1P-EV: these makes the sound much brighter, more of a HI-FI signature (also listening to HD-650). lf l were to recommend tubes, l'd go for the Russians for sure.

I have had a LD MKIII for about four years now, and have rolled every tube I could find (lived next to a vacuum tube warehouse in Denver, CO) and so far I've been happiest with my Russian 6N6Pi power tubes paired with either Mullard M8100's, Telefunken 6AK5's or surprisingly the US Army 5654's for the drivers. I tend to keep the Mullards for my blues / jazz library. I'm going from a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC into a Cambridge 640P to MKIII into some HifiMan HE400's.
