DeathWatchSeiko monster is a good benchmark. They have fantastic lume. HUGE lume markers. You are right. They are produced in the hundreds of thousands and made from lesser materials (mineral glass with no AR coatings, 304 stainless, 200 meters only, lessor movement quality) so naturally the price is lower. If you want hand made quality and exclusivity the selection from LÜM-TEC is really good.

RayKnightSeiko makes a wide range of watches. You can't really compare one of their lower end models (Monster) and deem the entire brand to be low quality. I suspect they stick with their Hardlex crystals not for cost savings, but because of its combination of being very scratch resistant and being less prone to shattering than sapphire. I own about half a dozen Seikos and have yet to scratch one of their crystals.
If you want a watch that has great lume, but with a bit more refinement than the Monster line, look at the Seiko Sumo line. I don't own a Lum-Tec to compare with, but I do have a Rolex Submariner and an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch; yet the Sumo remains one of my favorites.
