Perhaps penlight means something different in the EDC community than it does the medical community so does anyone know if this will work for judging pupillary reaction? I'd prefer not to sear anyone's retinas.

RashkhUsually penlights will specifically say if they are designed to be used in the field with medical application intended. There are several nice penlights out there that are, I’d cross reference them with the lumen output (not the CREE) and see how it stacks up. My initial guess would be no.

RashkhA good friend of mine is a Physician. I gave him one of these (black aluminum nichia) and he loves it. You won't sear anyone's retinas with 25lm.

RashkhBuckten is right with 25lm. Also, you can shine the light to the side of each eye if you're worried about it being too bright.
