It seems like the Cree LED is much more popular than the Nichia. Can anyone comment on the differences between the two besides lumens?
Edit: Also, is it possible to switch out the LED at a later time? Or are the bulbs not interchangeable?

hanryyI have not seen the Nichia in operation, but Lumintop is promoting the Nichia as a "color rendering" version (on Amazon). I read that as meaning it has a color temperature of similar value to the "natural white" CFL and LED light bulbs. However, I do not actually know what value in Kelvin the Nichia or Cree is. On their own web site, there is just a photo showing the different shape of the LED (Cree is square, Nichia rounded), and of course the difference in lumen-power.

hanryyYou can switch it if you know how to mod or pay someone to do it for you. It'll probably cost more than light if you get someone to mod it. Cree is LED is popular because it's brighter. I prefer Nichia's LED. I can't stand Cool white anymore since I saw how good Nichia's color rendering is. The Cree (5700k) is 32lm, 5lm and 110lm on high. Nichia(4000~4300K) is 18lm, 3lm, and 80lm. I think the Nichia is actually 20lm on Medium from the reviews I've been reading.
Look at this thread if you want an idea what HCRI vs cool white look like. http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?364259-Carclo-P60-drop-in-optics-beamshots-Quad-XP-G2-vs-219-Reference-tint-comparisons/page2

hanryyI bought the copper version of this light with the Cree in another drop. I didn't feel like waiting for this drop so I paid a little extra and bought this titanium version with the Nichia elsewhere. Comparing them side-by-side the Nichia is noticeably dimmer but does have a better color. If I had to choose only one it would be the Cree because I think the increased output is more useful than the better color (better but not dramatic to me). Luckily I don't have to choose. I keep the titanium Nichia in a sheath on my belt and the copper Cree in my EDC bag. Realistically both are great lights and either will serve you well. Now if you want to see an LED with truly excellent incandescent color, get a Malkoff M61W. I just got one of those in an MD2 body and its color is well worth the reduced output.
