I just got mine, with a Nichia LED. The max brightness seems surprisingly dim, though. When I cycle it through low-medium-high (clicking it on and off three times in a row), the high setting seems barely brighter than medium, if it is all. I've tested using a couple different freshly charged Eneloops, as well as a Duracell. Is that normal? Here are photos of the low, medium, and high settings (taken with exposure locked).

Update: After playing with it a bit more, it looks like maybe it goes from high to medium to low (and then back to high)? At any rate, the high seems only slightly brighter than medium. Update 2: It seems to be getting better. It definitely goes from high to medium to low, and the high setting is significantly brighter than before. I suspect that the reason it wasn't doing this before was because it was cold -- I had just brought it in from outside, and it was about 25º F out there. The light is performing as I would expect now, but if I'm right that the cold limits the LED's output, that's a little disappointing. This is what it looks like now (high, medium, low):
